Pitching In Isthmian League- supporters predictions 2021-22: Bury Town

By Ian Townsend

We’re off to Ram Meadow, where Ian Dulieu is our guide to the world of Bury Town

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-20 (or 22) will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off. We’re off to the North Division, with Bury Town our destination and Ian Dulieu with the wise words.

1. Thinking about last season- what there was of it- were there any highlights for you?

Despite only playing 11 games (4 League, 7 Cup) there were so many to choose from but the stand out game was Nuneaton Borough in the FA Cup. It had been raining non stop for days and that day was no different. From first light people were at the ground putting covers on the pitch. Russell Ward (Chairman) was marking the pitch 2 hours before kick off in torrential rain, it was a real team effort to get the game on.

On the pitch the players didn’t let the hard working volunteers down, A relentless effort saw us 2-0 up at half time. The second half was end to end stuff but the visitors couldn’t break through and we held on to win 2-0 in front of a 400 sell out crowd with people climbing trees outside the ground to get a view.

2. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2021-22 campaign?

We have the best squad since the 2010 league winning season. They play as a team and work so hard for each other so it would be unfair to pick out a few above the rest but Cemal Ramadan could be a good bet for top scorer in the league this season

3. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

I think we are capable of another good cup run and a top 5 finish is a real possibility.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Felixstowe & Walton United away as it can be a nice day out and it’s on the Easter weekend this year. Also Romford away, they have been messed around so much lately and I wish them well this season- and of course AFC Sudbury at home, best atmosphere of the season.

5. What is your favourite away ground?

Canvey Island, great terracing, seating and clubhouse. Great for container ship spotters too!
6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

AFC Sudbury. The home games are always full on with big crowds and a fantastic atmosphere.

7. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?

Come for the day, there is a large long stay, cheap car park right next to the ground. Good shopping and plenty of bars and restaurants as well as the Abbey Gardens- all are very close to the Ram Meadow ground.

8. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?

Gavin Johnson. We’ve had quite a few ex pro players at Bury Town but none made the impact Gavin made, he was the kingpin when we won the league. He made the game look so easy. Not the fastest player but his footballing brain more than made up for that,

9. Who will be in the top five at the end of the season?

Aveley, Heybridge Swifts, Bury Town, Maldon & Tiptree, TIlbury

Look out for the final predicted tables later this week!
