We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-20 (or 22) will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off. Stuart Daynes brings us his thoughts from the seaside, representing Felixstowe and Walton United.
1. Thinking about last season- what there was of it- were there any highlights for you?
The F.A Trophy run was so memorable, beating step 3 sides Metropolitan Police and Leatherhead amongst others. We were already looking good in the league, especially at home where we are unbeaten in 20 months.

2. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2021-22 campaign?
We’ve made some great signings, getting Sudbury pair Joe Whight and Billy Holland was incredible. Adding to that the addition of former pro Curtley Williams and the lively Josh Hitter who also stepped down a level to join us, there’s been some good business done.
3. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?
I’m certainly confident of top half, but I think we’ll surprise a few and have a good crack at the playoffs.
4. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?
Stowmarket will be interesting, we had some big battles with them back in the step 5 days and they’ll be right up there this season. Coggeshall is always looked upon as a biggie after our title race a few years back…. Plus seeing Olly Murs of course!
5. What is your favourite away ground?
So many great ones to choose from, I’d go for AFC Sudbury I guess as it’s the model ground for a club at our level, great facilities and people, shame about the 3G pitch though, I’m not a fan.
6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?
Stowmarket will be classed as biggest rivals I imagine. We were similar size clubs (small!) a decade ago, we both enjoy good crowds but I think we’ve improved our ground considerably more that Stow, they’ve spent a bucket load on players whereas we’ve lived within our means, only spend what we raise and have had a steady improvement year on year on and off the field. We haven’t looked for short term success and will benefit in the long run as we don’t rely on one or two donors, rather a large volunteer base and incredible support from over 100 businesses.
7. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?
Make a weekend of it, many are surprised by Felixstowe when visiting as we are of course known as the home of the biggest Port, however we are blessed with 5 miles of beaches, seaside attractions, beautiful seafront gardens, nature reserves, great shopping, huge variety of restaurants and we’re on the southern tip of the gorgeous Suffolk coast.
8. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?
Almost impossible to choose but Danny Crump was a favourite for many years, his goalkeeping was a huge part in our success over the last 7-8 years. It’s great he’s back as second ‘keeper now and his brother Andy is first team assistant manager so it’s a family affair that on the bench.
9. Who will be in the top five at the end of the season?
Bury Town, Maldon & Tiptree, Aveley, Tilbury, Felixstowe & Walton United
Look out for the final predicted tables later this week!
