Pitching In Isthmian Supporters Predictions 22-23: Canvey Island

By Ian Townsend

We're off to the Island, and Alex Gray is our guide to Canvey.

We're asking fans from each of our clubs to answer a series of questions about the past, present and future- and to predict the final league table for 22-23. Alex of Canvey is next.

1. Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?

In terms of last seasons highlights it's between either the playoff victory over Brentwood Town or absolutely hammering Romford 13-0- and breaking our own record score on the process.

2. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2022-23?

We have a few of last seasons promotion winning stars sticking around (the likes of Evans Kouassi and Jamie Salmon). I haven't seen many of the new signings play for Canvey- the first pre-season game at home to Concord Rangers was mostly trialists and otherwise fringe players, and I haven’t gone to any other friendlies so far.
3. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

I'm hoping for a top half finish or at the very least to be in mid-table. This will depend on how many of the new players are able to bed themselves into the current squad quickly.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

The derby matches against Hornchurch and Billericay Town

5. What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

Ironically given that they are one of our biggest rivals, it would be Billericay as the New Lodge was the first ever away game that I went to. Hornchurch is also up there due to the uniqueness of the ground in that it has an athletics track around the pitch.

6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

Billericay Town and Concord Rangers. Billericay due to the sheer number of times that we have played them and Concord as they share our island.

7. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?

Arrive early as the Car Park can get quite full depending on the time of year (Numerous times last season we had to park on Park Lane itself). If it is already full when you arrive then as I have stated above parking on Park Lane is going to be the best option, as the nearest major car parks to the ground are a 15-20 minute walk along the sea-front. Although if in Summer that walk can be quite a pleasant experience.

8. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?

It's got to be a toss up (although I’d need more than one coin) between George Sykes, Jason Hallett, Matt Price and Evans Kouassi. All were very good strikers in the six years that I've been watching the Gulls play.

9. Who do you predict will finish in the top five this season?

Hornchurch, Billericay Town, Folkestone Invicta, Bishops Stortford, Carshalton Athletic

Thanks Alex- right, who's next? If you'd like to represent your club, email Ian at townsendaround@gmail.com and he'll be in touch shortly.
