Pitching In Isthmian Supporters Predictions 22-23: Carshalton Athletic

Alan Johnstone is up next, with his views on those red, red Robins of Carshalton

We're asking fans from each of our clubs to answer a series of questions about the past, present and future- and to predict the final league table for 22-23. We’re off to Colston Avenue, in the company of Alan Johnstone

1. Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?
We had a good spell last November in the league, we won 6-1 at home to Brightlingsea Regent, but the following Monday we destroyed Folkestone Invicta 5-0 at the Avenue, and Folkestone were unbeaten until then. So that was an absolutely brilliant performance. I know you’ve not asked for the worst, but I’ll give it anyway our 5-0 defeat at home to Hornchurch, was an absolute low point !

2. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2022-23?

Carshalton-Alan Johnstone

Hard to say, as we have virtually new squad and management from last season meaning we only have 2 players left from then, Paris Hamilton-Downes and Tommy Bradford. Tommy has made a good impact already watching the pre-season fixtures. We have signed Bobby Mills from Corinthian Casuals, which could be a good signing. We’ve also got a few players from Tonbridge Angels. So they’ll bring some experience with them.
3. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

I think we could well be in the hat for a top 2 place, squad is looking strong with each passing game. We’ve the experienced Steve McKimm taking over the reins from Peter Adeniyi, and he got Tonbridge promotion, so already has a proven record of getting teams out of the Isthmian. I’d be happy with the playoff’s. We finished 12th last season, which was a little disappointing.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Hastings away, enjoy a good trip to there. Canvey Island too, haven’t been there for a long time. Bognor Regis Town too, our matches down there are always good entertaining games.

5. What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

Has to be the Dripping Pan, Lewes. Very near the station, some really good pubs near the ground. The ground itself has great character and has always been a favourite of mine. Moatside, Merstham too. It’s a shame we won’t be playing them this season after their relegation.

6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

In bygone days it used to be Sutton United, but not for a very long time now as they are a football league club. I now see Kingstonian, Leatherhead and Corinthian Casuals as rivals, certainly Kingstonian now they play at Tooting and Mitcham’s Imperial Fields.

7. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?

Pop into The Hope pub near the ground, it’s a lovely pub, that serves great beers, I think most away supporters know that pub. Then enjoy the atmosphere at Colston Avenue, we have a huge covered terrace down one side of the ground, great views of the game.

8. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?

Tough to pin down just one. I’ll go for three if you don’t mind. Gary Richards (defender), Matt Elverson (centre back) and Jimmy Bolton ( clubs record goal scorer).

9. Who do you predict will finish in the top five this season?

Hornchurch, Carshalton Athletic, Billericay Town, Horsham, Bishop’s Stortford
