Pitching In Performance of the Month Awards, September 2022

By Ian Townsend

Our League sponsors, Pitching In, also sponsor our Performance of the Month Awards. It’s time to honour our top performances from September.

September was a month filled with giantkillings, and three of our four winners are rewarded accordingly. Here are the destinations for our prizes.

Pitching In Isthmian Premier

Enfield Town travelled to Margate expecting a tough match, and it seemed that the hosts had duly delivered, twice going ahead. Not only did the Towners hit back, however, but they did more besides, hammering home five goals to win the match by five goals to two, with four different scorers- Wraynel Hercules on his debut, Joseph Payne, Andre Coker and Bilal Sayoud. They were also nominated for their four-nil win at Brightlingsea Regent, so all in all it was a rather positive month for the folks at the QEII Stadium.

Pitching In Isthmian North

Right, on with the slaying of giants! AFC Sudbury have done that a number of times over the last couple of seasons, and on this occasion it was National League South side St Albans City who felt the wrath of the Yellows. Only a late equaliser prevented Sudbury from winning the initial encounter at Clarence Park, so the Saints returned to the MEL Group Stadium, where goals from Sakariya Hassan and Josh Stokes secured another famous victory. The Yellows won two-one despite playing the last twenty two minutes with ten men.

Pitching In Isthmian South Central

What a season Binfield have been having- and their best moment so far was when National League South side Tonbridge Angels arrived at Stubbs Lane in the FA Cup. After a goalless first half the Moles took the game to the visitors after the break, burying them under an avalanche of goals to win four-nil. Sean Moore, Johnny Efedje, Lewis Pegg and Brad Pagliaroli did the damage- a magnificent performance, which they will now have a shiny trophy to help them remember.

Pitching In Isthmian South East Division

Beckenham Town have been superb since the first ball was kicked. The Becks, as we write, are still to taste defeat from open play- only a penalty shootout left them on the wrong end of a result- but we’re going back to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and a trip to National League South promotion chasers Dartford. An early goal from Harvey Brand gave Becks the lead, but when Charlie Sheringham equalised ten minutes after the break home fans inside Princes Park would undoubtedly have expected their side to go on and win. Visiting fans, of course, would have been confident of an entirely different outcome, and they got one, Robert Carter delivering a famous winning goal two minutes from time.

Congratulations to all at the club for delivering not just this result but an incredible season so far.

Pitching In is a Grassroots Sports Investment Programme launched by GVC, the multi-national sports-betting and gaming group which owns Ladbrokes and Coral. The partnership covers all three leagues that make up Steps 3 & 4 of the National Leagues System.

Pitching In has been set up with the objective of supporting, protecting and encouraging grassroots sports in the UK through a range of initiatives.

In addition to financial support, a key focus of the partnership will be to facilitate and encourage members of the community to become volunteers, and do some pitching in of their own. A Pitching In volunteering scheme will be established to link GVC’s Ladbrokes and Coral shop colleagues with their local clubs.
