We had a battle of the bottom two at Wheatsheaf Park last night, and the spoils went the way of Chalfont St Peter, who opened up a five point gap between themselves and hosts Staines Town- whilst remaining in the bottom two.
The Swans went into the match on the back of six consecutive defeats, matches in which they'd conceded a total of thirty two goals, but they kept a clean sheet until just before the break when they conceded a penalty. Isiah Noel-Williams stepped up to tuck it away- and within a minute the home fans had another reason to bury their heads in their hands, as Fabien Etienne made it two after a cool run between two defenders and an expert finish. The second half had no shortage of action but no further goals, and the Saints took a morale-boosting victory, after five matches without one.
Just two points and one place above Chalfont are Sutton Common Rovers, but the gap could have been much tighter had they not grabbed a late equaliser against Marlow. In a match played at Leatherhead's Fetcham Grove, the playoff chasing visitors took the lead early on, Khalid Simmo finding the back of the Rovers net after just nine minutes. Marlow then had to cope with two injuries, Charlie Samuel and Alex Salmon being forced from the field, the stoppages leading to eight added first half minutes.
After the break the match remained rather even, and sixteen minutes from time Rovers got the point their endeavour deserved, Germaine Dua with the equaliser.
That result sees Rovers still looking over their shoulders at the bottom two, as Chalfont have a game in hand. Marlow are three points behind the top five with a game in hand, but only five points away from second place Chertsey Town- who they welcome on Saturday- with two games in hand. Their promotion chances remain firmly in their own hands.
