Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

Cray Wanderers lead the Ryman North table by five points, although they had to be content with collecting just one on Saturday after drawing 1-1 with fancied Harlow Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Hawks may be only twelfth in the table but they have several games in hand on all around them – and seven on Cray – due to various cup commitments.

But they fell behind at Barrows Farm to an early third minute Uche Ibemere effort. Leon Antoine equalised 14 minutes later, and that’s how the game finished.

AFC Sudbury dropped a place to third after being held to a goalless draw at the Wardale Williams Stadium by seventh-placed Cheshunt, allowing Mark Stimson`s Thurrock side to move into second place after a 5-1 romp against Wroxham at Ship Lane.

Jordan Clark gave the hosts a 34th minute lead from the penalty spot but Nathan Stone sent the teams in all-square when he pulled the Yachtsmen level three minutes before the break.

Ten minutes after half-time Dave Cowley restored Thurrock`s lead and eight minutes on Michael Toner made it 3-1. And a brace from Ross Wall in the final six minutes made it nap hand for the Essex outfit.

Thurrock`s neighbours AFC Hornchurch are fourth after a 3-0 home win against mid-table Dereham Town.

The Urchins had to wait until nine minutes into the second period to make the breakthrough with a goal from Tobi Joseph, who then quickly doubled his and Hornchurch`s tally three minutes later.

Dave Collis wrapped up proceedings with a third 10 minutes from time.

Bury Town complete the top five after they secured a 4-1 success against struggling Barkingside at Ram Meadow.

Phil Weavers opened the Blues` account after six minutes and Ollie Canfer added a second on the 25-minute mark. Three minutes after the break Justin Miller added Bury`s third from the spot and Weavers scored his second to make it 4-0 on 57 minutes.

Kaymar Salmon reduced the deficit eight minutes later but Side had Paul Wright dismissed with 13 minutes to go and Bury defender Tevan Allen followed him for an early shower three minutes from time after he received two swift bookings.

Tilbury are a point and a place behind Bury after a 3-1 win against Romford at Chadfields.

But the Dockers had to come back from being a 48th minute Chinedu McKenzie goal down to win, courtesy of Tony Martin after 62 minutes, Emiel Aiken three minutes later and Jack Carlile on 74 minutes.

Maldon & Tiptree enjoyed a third straight win with a 2-1 triumph at Great Wakering Rovers.

It was Darren McQueen who proved to be Maldon’s goal hero in the Essex derby clash.

He put the visitors ahead in the dying stages of the first half and even though Great Wakering equalised with a 62nd minute leveller from Jay Nash, McQueen got a second in the 71st minute.

Maldon held on to their lead this time to make it nine points taken from their last three games and move up into ninth spot in the table.

Aveley are tenth after recording a 2-1 success at Capershotts against third-bottom Waltham Abbey.

Michael Pindy broke the deadlock to give the Abbots a 54th minute lead. But a Billy Holland brace in the 71st and then right at the end of the game, won it for the Millers.

A goal from Mitch Hunter allowed Witham Town to end a run of three games without a victory as they came from behind to win at Phoenix Sports.

However, it had looked like Witham would struggle to record their first win in four league outings at the halfway stage as they trailed 1-0 at the break to a 17th minute goal from Ricky Freeman.

It all changed in three second half minutes, Hussan Nalbant coming off the bench to get a 57th minute leveller for Town and Hunter popping in the winner on the hour-mark to lift his side one place to 19th in the table.

Heybridge Swifts are still in the bottom two as they went down 3-1 to Soham Town Rangers at Scraley Road.

It had been goalless at half-time but Soham quickly took the lead after the restart as George Darling found the back of the net in the 47th minute.

Rangers then went 2-0 ahead with a Ryan Sharman goal in the 66th minute and, despite Swifts halving the deficit thanks to an own goal three minutes later, the visitors made the points safe in the 90th minute with a third from Callum Russell.
