Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

Cray Wanderers head into the busy festive season on fixtures holding a three-point lead at the top of the Ryman North table after easing to a 4-0 home win over struggling Barkingside on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The hosts went ahead on 35 minutes when Andre McCollin opened his account from the penalty spot. McCollin doubled Cray’s advantage just past the hour-mark and Leigh Bremner made it 3-0 just three minutes later.

Barkingside conceded a fourth goal 11 minutes from time as McCollin completed his treble and remain in the drop zone after seeing their winless streak extended to nine matches with only two points gained.

Second-placed AFC Sudbury maintained their challenge after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Aveley at The Wardale Williams Stadium.

Three first half goals settled the affair with AFC playing some good football in the process with the goals being scored by Joe Maybanks after 18 minutes, Craig Parker seven minutes later and Luke Callander on 36 minutes. A goal from sub Michael Pindy 15 minutes from time spoiled the day but the success means a new record for consecutive wins in the Ryman League of seven.

AFC Hornchurch, Thurrock and Cheshunt occupy the other top five places.

The Urchins are third after a 2-0 home win over bottom-markers Waltham Abbey.

It was goalless at the break but just four minutes after it, George Purcell broke the deadlock to put the hosts` in front from the spot. And they wrapped up victory just past the hour-mark through Elliot Styles.

Thurrock are fourth but were held 2-2 at Dereham Town, who are ninth.

Ross Wall gave Thurrock a 17th minute lead that Luke Tuttle cancelled out from the spot a minute before the break. Tuttle then converted the Deres second penalt of the game to put them in front in the 74th minute but Dave Cowley equalised 10 minutes later.

Cheshunt`s Stuart Zahone helped himself to a hat-trick as the Ambers beat Great Wakering Rovers 3-0 at home.

The striker who made his name mostly with Kent clubs previously, scored his first two in the 37th and 42nd minutes and then completed his triple from the spot 12 minutes after the interval.

Tilbury are level on points with Cheshunt after a comprehensive 4-0 win over Witham Town and Chadfields in a game that saw both teams finish with ten-men.

Harry Cook gave the Dockers an early ninth minute lead that Kurt Smith added to nine minutes before half-time. Cook and Witham`s Lance Atkins were then both dismissed for an altercation seven minutes after the restart but it affected the visitors the most as they conceded two more to Tony Martin on 66 minutes and Conor Mead 16 minutes from time.

Bury Town lost their top five spot after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Thamesmead Town, Theo Fairweather-Johnson scoring the only goal of the game at Bayliss Avenue 10 minutes after the break.

Harlow Town, most pundits` choice as promotion favourites in pre-season, moved into eighth place after beating neighbours Maldon & Tiptree 2-1 at Barrows Farm.

Harlow opened the scoring on 24 minutes when Ryan Melaugh netted at the far post. But the Jammers pulled level just past the hour-mark when recent signing Sam Newson tapped home a cross from close range before the Hawks came back with a late goal from Alex Read on 88 minutes.

Soham Town Rangers won 2-1 at Ship Lane against Romford in another encounter in which both teams finished a man light.

Jordan Gent put the visitors in front after 12 minutes, but on 35 minutes a confrontation between Soham`s Salim Relizani and Boro`s George Woodward ended with them both heading for early showers. Nine minutes into the second half Ross Paterson doubled Rangers` lead, and although sub Akwasi Marfo pulled one back 20 minutes from time, Soham held on for the points.

Two teams are the wrong end of the table, Heybridge Swifts and second-bottom Redbridge, met at Scraley Road with the points being shared.

They now sit two points above the drop zone. Redbridge took the lead on 27 minutes through Jay Knight. Tyrone Scarlett pulled the sides level after the break when he made it 1-1 on 48 minutes. George Doyle then put Redbridge back in front on 59 minutes before Paulius Ditkevicius equalised to make it 2-2.

The team immediately above Heybridge in the table, Wroxham, shared a 1-1 draw with Phoenix Sports at Trafford Park.

Michael Sommerfield put the Yachtsmen in front after 13 minutes and Ali Gordon equalised just past the half-hour mark – and that`s how the scoreline remained.
