Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

With AFC Sudbury already crowned Ryman North champions, who would make the play-offs and who would become the third side to finish in the relegation zone were the issues left to settle going into the penultimate Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Thurrock, Harlow Town, Cray Wanderers and AFC Hornchurch will contest the play-offs but who finishes third-bottom is still between three teams.

Thurrock beat the side currently occupying third-bottom spot, Waltham Abbey, with Daniel Francis putting the Ship Lane outfit in front after 10 minutes. After Ryan Flack`s 36th minute equaliser, they had to wait until the very last minute to seal victory with a Jordan Clark penalty.

Harlow are level on points with Thurrock in the battle to finish runners-up and they also won on Saturday, 3-1 at the Arena against Great Wakering Rovers.

Joey Benjamin gave the Hawks a 26th minute lead that was doubled a minute later, courtesy of an Ellis Sands own goal. Lewis Perkins added Harlow`s third on 76 minutes, with Dan Gilchrist netting an 84th minute consolation for Rovers.

Cray and the Urchins are battling it out for fourth and fifth spots, with Cray having two games left as they were off on Saturday.

The Urchins beat one of the three teams still in relegation trouble, Heybridge Swifts.

It was Swifts who took a 29th minute lead through Jordan Palmer. However, Nathan Cooper levelled two minutes into the second half and George Purcell’s penalty, just after the hour-mark, put the hosts 2-1 ahead.

Swifts’ Jack Barham had a penalty saved by Hornchurch keeper Sam Mott to deny his side an equaliser but they have a couple of games remaining and a point would make them secure.

Wroxham are the other team still in danger but they were another to be rained off on Saturday.

Cheshunt will finish an agonisingly close sixth and won 2-0 at Theobalds Lane against Romford with two goals from Jason Hallett within a minute in the final six minutes to take his tally to 36 for the season to date.

Brightlingsea Regent signed off at North Road with a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to already-relegated Barkingside.

Regent took a 58th minute lead through Jake Clowsley. However, it was an advantage that only lasted two minutes as George Lataaya fired Side level. And the visitors, who are second from bottom, added their second through Tyrone Scarlet from 30 yards in the 81st minute.

Champions AFC Sudbury`s final away day saw them inflict a 4-1 defeat on Phoenix Sports.

Craig Parker opened the visitors` account after 15 minutes and Liam Wales made it 2-0 at the break with a second on 43 minutes. Jordan Blackwell added a third in the 69th minute and, after Christie Pattison had reduced the deficit on 73 minutes, made it 4-1 through George Clarke three minutes from time.

And Redbridge, doomed to finishing bottom of the pile, went down 1-0 at Oakside to Bury Town, whose Darcy De`Ath grabbed the only goal after 19 minutes.
