Shot of the Season 21-22: Alan Edmonds

By Ian Townsend

We asked our fabulous Pitching In Isthmian Photographers to choose their favourite photograph of the campaign, and tell us why it is important to them.

We’ve had a magnificent Pitching In Isthmian season, one which has been illustrated and enriched by the work of a number of brilliant photographers, who have recorded it for posterity. Alan Edmonds brings us his very favourite image of the season.

• When was the image taken (match, event, etc)?

Heybridge Swifts vs Bury Town, Pitching In Isthmian North 11/09/21

• Why is it important to you?

Andy Fennell’s return to Heybridge- and scoring. So many times players run away from you but he ran straight towards me, looking straight down the lens and the keeper and defenders looking devastated in the background. A perfect shot for one of our sponsors as well.

• Where can we find the rest of your work?

On the club website, here.

• How and why did you begin taking photographs at football matches?

My son plays for one of the Heybridge Swifts Youth teams and about 5 years ago he had the chance to be a mascot. He loved it and wanted to go again, so we started going to watch games. I thought I would take my camera along and see how I got on, and it went from there really. I bought myself a better lens and camera and I think it is a great way to learn more about photography, as you don’t have chance to re-take a shot or set anything up. You learn about every type of situation from bright sunny days in August to the dullest grey days of February.

• What are your hopes for the forthcoming season?

I hope the Swift’s have a good go at winning the league and also a cup run would be nice, especially the FA Cup and draw Portsmouth in the first round would be nice.

If you regularly take photographs at our matches but haven't yet submitted yours, there's still time. Send it to Ian at townsendaround@gmail.com
