South Division Supporters Predictions 17/18- revisited!

By Ian Townsend

With the season now over, we thought we’d revisit the predictions our supporters made about the outcome of each division before the big kick off. How did you do?

Making predictions a month before the season starts can be tricky- but our South Division tipsters rose to the challenge superbly, correctly picking four out of the top six and getting the bottom two exactly right. It may be, perhaps, that the South Division was easier to second guess, but the record of the supporters who rose to our challenge was still very good indeed.

So, what did our prediction team get right? Well, first and foremost, you predicted that Carshalton Athletic would rise like a…Robin…and soar to promotion. You were also sure that Corinthian-Casuals would form part of the playoff quartet, and you were not too far away with much of the top ten. You were sure that Shoreham would go straight back down, and also that their closest challengers for the spot that nobody wanted would be Molesey. You were also very nearly right with a number of your other final placings.

The biggest surprise seems to have been the form of now-promoted Walton Casuals, who you had placed in tenth spot. You were also convinced that Greenwich Borough would take the title- indeed, using your predictions the bookies would have been paying out on Gary Alexander’s men (of course, Gary is now at Ashford United) before the first ball had been kicked! Certainly the idea that they would have lost in a Playoff Semi-Final for the second time in two years wasn’t expected.

Now, just for a bit of fun- there is no prize apart from permission to boast about your prowess- we’ve been through all of the Bostik South Supporters predictions we received, and come up with a winner. We gave three points for a correct prediction and one point for being within two places. The outcome was incredibly close, and came down to a Playoff Final between Kane Brooker of Walton Casuals and David Hollingsbee of Faversham Town, but after a penalty shootout (well, a recount) the winner by one point was David of Faversham. Kane, sorry, but you’ve enough to celebrate already!

David was better at the wrong end of the table than the right end, getting the final positions of Molesey, VCD Athletic, Guernsey and- at the top this time- Carshalton Athletic exactly right, and also guessed eight other sides finishing positions within two places. Congratulations David- it’s just a shame that Faversham didn’t perform as you would have hoped and finish fourth!

We’ll be doing this again for the new season, so if you fancy representing your club, answering questions about your favourite moments of last season and your hopes for the next one, and then putting together your prediction table, email Ian on townsendaround@gmail.com.
