Striker mourned by many

Hendon and Heybridge Swifts and a number of other Ryman League clubs have paid tribute to Dominic Gentle after their former player passed away following a short illness.

The former Watford schoolboy, who also turned out for Boreham Wood, Billericay Town, Bishop's Stortford, Enfield, Purfleet, Slough, St Albans City and Waltham Abbey in the 1990s and 2000s, lost his battle against an aggressive brain tumour aged 44 on Friday 18 March.

In a statement on their website, Swifts paid tribute to the striker, pictured front row second from right, who first signed for them back in September 1997 when Woking manager Garry Hill was at the helm.

Spokesman Chris Daines said: “His ability to hold the ball and bring others into the game plus an eye for goal made him such a success. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Hendon's tribute read: "It is with sadness that we have learnt of the death of Dominic Gentle. Dominic played for the Greens in the 1999-2000 season, playing an important part in the campaign, scoring 21 goals in 53 appearances. Everyone at Hendon sends our condolences to Dominic's family at this very sad time."
