Strolling to Euro glory, literally!

By David Watters

Herne Bay have strolled to European glory at a Walking Football tournament in Holland!

A team of over 50s, pictured, from the Ryman South club came out on top in Holland last week against 27 other sides from across Europe to lift the 2016 Almelo City Cup.

Walking football, the increasingly popular slower-paced version of the beautiful game aimed at the over 50s, is non-contact and as the name suggests, anyone who sprints, runs or jogs while the ball is in play is penalised.

Bay beat HASUF UK, a representative side made up of players from Heanor Strollers, Alfretonians, Sheffield United and Folkestone Wanderers, 1-0 in the final of the tournament at Heracles Almelo's 13,500 seater Polman Stadion.

Before that they topped Group 2 with a positive goal difference of 32 and reached the semi-finals with a second placed finish in another group contest despite suffering a first defeat.

Gerry Allen’s solitary goal in their last four clash against the only German team at the tournament, Iserlohn, set up the all-English final in which he struck again to bring the cup back to the north Kent coast and the trophy cabinet at Winch's Field.
