Swifts and Jammers slay giants, Yellows down local rivals

By Ian Townsend

East Thurrock United also picked up a win- and Witham narrowly missed out. Our FA Cup round up focuses on our Pitching In Isthmian North sides.

Berkhamsted welcomed our very own Witham Town, and broke their hearts with a late equaliser and last minute winner. Adam Vyse gave the visitors the lead just before the hour, and it looked like they were on the way to a famous victory, but it was not to be.

Bury Town and AFC Sudbury drew two-two in the league on Bank Holiday Monday, but this one never looked like ending level. Nnamdi Nwachuku scored goal number eight for the season- all in his last four matches- to give the Yellows the lead in the first half, and after the break Josh Stokes added two more for a three-nil victory. Town lose their unbeaten record, Sudbury retain theirs in style.

East Thurrock United have had an unfortunate start to their Pitching In Isthmian North campaign, but finally things are starting to roll right for the Rocks, with a two-one win over Biggleswade. Amaree Robinson-Jones opened the scoring on eighteen minutes, debutant Brian Moses made it two eighteen minutes later, and although the visitors did reply midway through the second half that was that.

Edgware & Kingsbury were the hosts for Grays Athletic, and the hosts lost for the first time this season as Athletic turned on the style. Ronnie Winn was the chief architect of victory, hitting a hat trick, with Callum Watts getting the second of Athletic’s four. The hosts had taken the lead on three minutes, but that was the high point of their afternoon.

Hitchin Town hosted unbeaten Heybridge Swifts- and the visitors remained unbeaten, firing home three goals without reply to stun their Pitching In Southern Premier Central opponents. Darren Phillips opened the scoring on twenty six minutes, and after the break Jack Adlington-Pile piled on the misery for the home faithful, addling two more! Maldon & Tiptree laid out the jam coloured welcome mat for Haringey Borough. The Jammers came into the match on the back of a string of four successive league defeats, but this is a side who have been slaying giants for years, and they’d already slain this giant in 20-21 so knew they could do it again. So it proved, a late winner from Kamani McFarlane- who also got their opener- enough for victory, despite Georgios Aresti’s equaliser for the North Londoners.

We said a big welcome back to the round up to Romford, who were the hosts for Hashtag United. Boro lost twice and drew once with the Tags in three matches last season, but they got their revenge, coming out on top in a five goal thriller. Emmanuel Okunja and Toby Aromolaran scored for the Tags, who had Billy Willis sent off after just five minutes- but a much changed Romford side scored three and march on.
