Terrors come to City Hall

Tooting & Mitcham United's scholars visited City Hall for Mayor's Question Time

Tooting & Mitcham United's Academy Scholars were a part of history recently, as they were invited by London Assembly member Leonie Cooper to witness the last ever Mayor's Question Time at the famous City Hall building next to Tower Bridge. The Mayor and the London Assembly are moving to a new home at the Royal Docks, in the London Borough of Newham.

The Academy Scholars sat in the main chamber, were welcomed by the Assembly Chairman, and were referred to by both the mayor, Sadiq Khan, and the opposition leader during the long debates that took place. It was great opportunity for the squad to see how decisions are made at the centre of their local government, and to understand that their everyday lives are shaped by the people present.

Second Year Scholar Joe Alvarez gave his view on the experience:

"I learnt how the London Mayor and Local Assembly members discuss problems like the environment, policing, Transport for London and more. I enjoyed it because it showed me that that they talk about relevant points that affect me and my peers a lot. It showed me that they care about the community and those in it."

The project was a part of the clubs commitment to expanding the world view of their scholars, and empowering them to understand their role in their community and how they can affect positive change.
