The Romford Refund

Romford supporters don't have unrealistic aspirations. There were no tantrums from the Boro faithful when their side fell to a narrow home defeat against Canvey Island at the weekend, and that's not a surprise, as even when fighting relegation during the past two seasons they've been a cheerful bunch.

Last night, however, manager Paul Martin decided that the fans had been forced to suffer far beyond their normal tolerance level. They had travelled to Basildon United with typical early-season hope, and left ninety minutes later after witnessing a with a six-nil thrashing and an abject performance from their favourites. Today Martin, via the club twitter feed, issued a statement that recognised their pain- and promised to do something about it.

"To all Romford fans that attended our defeat against Basildon United last night, myself, the staff and the playing squad would like to apologise to our fans for our extremely poor and disappointing performance.

As a thank you for your continuous support, we would like to reimburse last nights ticket costs for all #Boro fans that attended the game. Anyone who attended please come and see me on Saturday and we will compensate you."

Given that Romford's manager and players don't actually get paid, any refunds will- as pointed out by club chairman Steve Gardener, also on social media- come out of their own pockets. But Steve is a little worried that the club are about to find out that they had six hundred fans at Gardiners Close last night!

Don't worry Steve. Even if Boro fans made up the entire crowd, there were no more than one hundred and eighty!
