Three points separate the top five. Can Heath extend their lead- or can one of the others take over?

By Ian Townsend

Haywards Heath Town and Ramsgate are the only unbeaten clubs remaining in the Pitching In Isthmian South East Division, with a point separating them. But they aren't the only ones with their eyes on the prize.

Haywards Heath Town travel to face an inconsistent Phoenix Sports. Whilst Heath have been sweeping all things before them, Sports have hit a slump and sunk to seventeenth, after losing four consecutive matches in all competitions. Will today be the day they bounce back? Shaun Saunders men will hope not, as they could extend their lead at the top with victory.

Anything less than victory, however, could let second place Ramsgate in. Two points behind the leaders but with a better goal difference, the Rams host eighth place VCD Athletic, and after winning their last two matches by five goals to nil will be full of confidence. Vickers also got five last weekend so won’t be short on confidence themselves, and are unbeaten in three.

Herne Bay, in third, will be hoping the top two slip up. Three points off the top but with a better goal difference than Heath, Bay have won four of their last five and have striker Zak Ansah in his usual top form. They travel to eleventh place East Grinstead Town, who in their last home match defeated another promotion contender, Cray Valley PM, five-three.

The fourth place Millers are off to Whitstable Town, who haven’t won a single match yet and are currently without a manager. The Oysterboys can’t be far away from getting it right- they’ve not been on the receiving end of any League hammerings- but Cray Valley PM will be in no mood to be kind, and will look to end a run of four consecutive away games with a third victory.

Ashford United, in fifth, host draw specialists Three Bridges- who have drawn four of their seven matches so far. The Nuts and Bolts fell to their first league defeat of the season against Haywards Heath Town last time out, following that with a penalty shootout win in the FA Trophy; whilst Bridges have only one win in their last five- but only one defeat, too!

Sixth place Sittingbourne travel to tenth place Chichester City. The hosts have been in excellent form of late, losing only to National League South Maidstone United in the last month and scoring freely; whilst the Brickies are also in fine form, winning three of their last four.

Lancing had a torrid start to the season but two wins from three have seen them climb the table. Opponents- and visitors- Sevenoaks Town started well, but have fallen off the wagon in dramatic fashion, losing their last two matches by five goals to nil- indeed they’ve now won only one of their last eight matches in all competitions.

Finally, winless Burgess Hill Town will look to put that right today as they host Faversham Town. The Hillians do know what it’s like to win- they have managed two FA Cup victories- but they desperately need some league points as they have only one; whilst the Lilywhites are not in good form either, with only one point from their last twelve, that coming at East Grinstead Town last weekend.
