Town slip up- as the battle for the Play Off places intensifies

By Ian Townsend

We only had two matches in the Pitching In Isthmian North Division last night, and only three goals- but they may all turn out to be important.

With four sides battling for the final play off place at present, each of them on forty eight points, it was important that Brentwood Town used one of their games in hand to give themselves a cushion over Dereham Town, Hashtag United and Felixstowe & Walton United- but AFC Sudbury had other ideas.

The Yellows had promotion pretentions of their own earlier in the season, and indeed were in the top five from their third match until their seventeenth, but perhaps reawakened their ambitions by closing the gap on the four sides above them to four points with victory over Town last night. The match had only one goal, and it was scored after twelve minutes by debutant Correy Davidson- but it did manage three red cards, Luke Wilson departing for the hosts seven minutes before the break, before the ten men watched on as their visitors went down to nine late on, James Love and Matt Cripps joining Wilson in the changing room.

Witham Town were on the road for the second match in succession as they travelled for a derby match against Coggeshall Town. Witham pulled themselves out of the bottom three with an impressive win at Maldon & Tiptree on Friday night. This is Witham’s seventh match against the Seed Growers since their hosts were promoted to our ranks, and they still haven’t managed a win, but they’ve never been closer than they were last night, Adam Vyse’s goal ten minutes after the break looking to have given them all the points before Tyler Brampton popped up right at the end to equalise.

That gives Witham a five point gap over second bottom Barking, and a three point gap over third bottom Hullbridge Sports. Coggeshall remain thirteenth, six points further up.
