Tuesday's Ryman Premier action review

Ryman League Premier Division

There were just a couple of matches in the Ryman Premier Division on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Wingate & Finchley returned to winning ways with a slender 2-1 victory over Tonbridge Angels at Longmead to move to within two points of the play-off places.

The Blues took the lead in the fourth minute, Tommy Tejan-Sie beating the offside trap before slotting past Kyle Merson in the Tonbridge goal.

Angels looked to hit back immediately and put the visitors under pressure but in the 20th minute the lead was doubled against the run of play, Jack Read slotting home a rebound from close range when Richard Graham's shot was beaten away.

The match swung back in favour of the hosts when Dee Okojie halved the deficit in the 33rd minute but despite continuing to press, Tonbridge couldn't find another without and Wingate held on for three important points.

In Tuesday's other clash, relegation-threatened Witham Town secured a vital last-gasp point in their home game against Canvey Island.

Witham have paid a high price for late strikes against them this season, but they finally achieved one of their own in the Essex derby.

Impressive on-loan forward George Sykes gave the visiting Gulls an 11th minute lead and that looked as though it was going to be enough. But deep into injury-time, the Gulls were punished from a free-kick, John Watson scrambling home the equaliser from close range.
