Two points separate the top two- and both have tough matches this weekend. Will Ware or the Geordies top the table on Saturday night- and can the rest close the gap?

It’s our preview of what looks to be a rather damp Saturday in the South Central Division

For the last few weekends Ware and Hanwell Town have been battling it out for top spot in the South Central Division, and with a seven point gap between the second place Geordies and third place Westfield it is- currently at least- very much a two-horse race. Both have tricky matches in prospect this weekend.

Ware host a fast-improving Marlow side who suffered something of a blip in midweek as they fell by a single goal at Northwood. Prior to that last season’s Playoff Semi-Finalists had gone six matches unbeaten, and indeed had only one defeat during their previous nine- that coming against Hanwell Town. The Blues, however, are in excellent form themselves, and head into this match having won eight out of their last ten matches, and each of their last four.

Hanwell Town are two points behind Ware, although they do have a game in hand. The Geordies are on the road so long as Chipstead isn’t under water, and the Chips will be smarting from their defeat at Hertford Town last weekend, a result which ended an eleven match unbeaten run. The Geordies have won five of their last six- drawing the other- and scored six goals against playoff chasing Waltham Abbey last time out.

Westfield travel to face that Abbotts side, so long as their pitch passes inspection at 10AM tomorrow. The Abbotts have fallen out of the top five in recent weeks, having lost three of their last five- and fans must be scratching their heads about how a side that scores seven one weekend can concede six the next. Westfield have won their last two matches, scoring three goals each time, and seem to be returning to the form that saw them defeat both of the top two before falling to three consecutive defeats.

Chertsey Town have been flying of late. The Curfews head into their match with Barking on the back of an eight match unbeaten run that includes six victories, although they were surprisingly held by FC Romania last time out. Barking defeated Tooting and Mitcham United last time out and will not have given up on the playoffs yet- they are six points behind the top five but if they could find some consistency look equipped to do better.

Fifth place Uxbridge host a local derby with Northwood. The Woods will be in a fine mood after finally lifting their losing curse in midweek with victory over Marlow- and moving three points clear of bottom place. Their hosts have won their last two and victory could take them as high as third.

Our form side are Bracknell Town, who travel to Tooting and Mitcham United. The Robins have been scintillating of late, and have moved to within two points of the top five after going undefeated since mid December. They scored seven goals against a sorry Staines Town side last weekend and have won their last five matches, and indeed eight of their last ten. The Terrors, in contrast, seem to have forgotten how to be terrifying, losing their last four matches and sliding down the table. They will be championing the cause of Football v Homophobia at the match.

Bedfont Sports travel to face South Park, if Whitehall Lane hasn’t floated away by then. The Sparks have lost their last five matches and will hope to get back to winning ways, but the Sports are four matches unbeaten and always difficult to defeat. Congratulations to the club on reaching the Middlesex County Cup Final, by the way!

Harlow Town host Chalfont St Peter in a match which both will desperately want to win, as they have both been starved of that winning feeling for quite some time. The Hawks have won only two of their last ten and head into this one on the back of three successive defeats, whilst the Saints haven’t won any during that period, although shouldn’t be too worried given they have an eighteen point advantage over the side at the bottom.

That side at the bottom is Staines Town. The managerless Swans have probably forgotten what it feels like to win a match, given they haven’t managed to pick up three points since November 19th. They come into their match with FC Romania on the back of six consecutive defeats during which they’ve shipped twenty six goals. The visiting Wolves are only three points clear of Town, and have only taken seven points out of their last thirty- but that’s still six more than their hosts. They do have an inferior goal difference, however, so victory would lift Staines above them.

Ashford Town, bottom for so much of the season, have put four points between themselves and last place, which perhaps demonstrates that their form has improved of late. They’ve won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six matches, and if they can avoid defeat as they host Hertford Town this weekend will secure a three match unbeaten run. Town are one place but five points above them, and will be buoyant after ending Chipstead’s long unbeaten record last weekend.
