Wednesday night wonders

By Ian Townsend

We had four matches across Step Four last night- and no small amount of incident. Here's our round up of the action.

When Witham Town travelled to face Romford in February they were in something of a slump, with four consecutive defeats, whilst Boro were just starting to show signs of life following the Tamplin takeover and were expected to take three points. Of course those three points went back to Witham, and last night, with Town in a similar slump, they once more travelled to face Tamplin's boys. Who says that lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place?

Actually it's not quite the same place, as last season Romford were playing in Barking (or occasionally at Aveley), whereas for this campaign they are firmly based on the new 3G of Mayesbrook Park, Barking, but the outcome was most definitely the same, as the points headed back to Town after a two-one victory. Witham were two goals to the good at half time, Julian Simon-Parson and Greg Akpele striking home within six minutes of the break, and whilst Jay May got one back for the hosts on the hour an equaliser wouldn't come.

Witham's first win leaves them bottom, but now only on goal difference, whilst Romford are in fourteenth, only a point better off.

Our headline image, of two Romford fans, comes from Dave at Stadium Photography. Seemingly a newcomer to our stadiums, you can follow him on Twitter, here- and as we've been loving his quirky shots this season, we'd recommend you did.

Elsewhere in the North Division Cambridge City also got their first win of the campaign, coming from behind to defeat Soham Town Rangers in a match which both finished with ten men. Sam Kelly got the opener for Rangers on the quarter hour, but fifteen minutes later City were level through Tom Hitchcock. Jake Andrews for Rangers and Isaac Maynard for City were then both red carded, five minutes before the break, and the winning goal for the hosts came four minutes of time, from Ryan Ingrey, introduced from the bench fourteen minutes earlier.

The South East Division had only one match and four goals, as Sevenoaks Town were held to a two-all draw by Hythe Town. Frannie Collin got his fifth of the season for the Cannons to give them the lead in the twenty seventh minute, but they held it for less than two hundred and forty seconds as Tyrell Richardson-Brown struck back for Oaks. And that was that until ten minutes from the end, when Kyle De Silva looked to have won it for the hosts by scoring from the spot- but Liam Smith had other ideas, equalising for Hythe six minutes later.

Oaks finish the night in second place, Hythe are fourteenth.

We also had one match in the South Central Division, and one goal. It looked like we'd have no goals at all, as for eighty nine minutes FC Romania and Tooting and Mitcham nite couldn't be separated, and then Mark Waters popped up with a winner.
