Wednesday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Grays Athletic and Harrow Borough maintained their unbeaten start to the new Ryman League Premier Division season on Wednesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Grays were made to work hard to earn another three points as they defeated a yet-to-win Canvey Island 2-0 at the Mill Field.

It took Grays until the 74th minute to make the breakthrough when Canvey failed to clear and Dumebi Dumaka got his head on the ball to score from close range. And six minutes later it was all over when former Grays favourite Glenn Poole thumping the ball into his own net.

Newly-promoted Burgess Hill Town won their opening two matches as a Premier Division side but Harrow inflicted a 5-0 drubbing on the Hillians at their own Leylands Park ground to make it back-to-back defeats for the Sussex outfit.

It was a particularly good evening for Marc Charles-Smith, who grabbed a brace with goals in the ninth and 61st minutes, his first followed by a 29th minute strike from Lewis Driver.

David Taylor on 43 minutes made it 3-0 at the break and Dylan Cascoe added the fifth after 74 minutes – four minutes before Boro`s Joshua Webb received a straight red card for retaliation.

Dulwich Hamlet suffered a second consecutive defeat as they lost by a single goal at Leatherhead, the only goal of the game arriving in the 16th minute when a free-kick floated into the box saw Phil Walsh left unmarked to head home.

Lewes are still searching for their first victory of the 2015-16 season after being held to a 1-1 draw at the Dripping Pan by Hampton & Richmond Borough, for whom this was a third stalemate in their five outings.

Moussa Diarra gave the Beavers a 13th minute lead with a powerful header. But the Rooks eventually got back on level terms with 10 minutes of the game remaining in somewhat controversial circumstances when Lewes` Alex Laing went one-on-one with Beavers` keeper Seb Brown.

Despite the very slippery wet surface, the referee deemed Brown`s challenge to be a foul and awarded a penalty. He also sent the former AFC Wimbledon favourite off for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

After a lengthy delay while Hampton made a substitution and put midfielder Jake Rose in goal, Leon Redwood kept his cool to equalise from the spot.
