Who will be top tonight? Choose one from eight!

By Ian Townsend

With only three points separating first and eighth, it’s all to play for in the Pitching In isthmian North Division

Grays Athletic, our leaders, have been in fine form- and a change of manager seems not to have affected them at all. They bring Felixstowe and Walton United to Parkside hoping to preserve their one hundred percent home record; whilst the Seasiders, in sixth, are also in good form and could even hit the top- although they’d have to score a rather incredible amount of goals to do it!

With AFC Sudbury in Cup action, the biggest challenge to Grays’ supremacy could come from third place Canvey Island. The Gulls are in fabulous form, with Matt Price and Evans Kouassi scoring goals for fun- and today those two face their former club as Heybridge Swifts arrive at the seaside. Swifts got their first win of the season last Saturday, defeating local rivals Maldon & Tiptree, and would dearly love to follow that up by beating another of the promotion favourites.

Fourth place Barking host eighth place Witham Town. The Blues are one point off the top, the visitors three, and both have fallen off the wagon of late after some earlier positive performances, the Blues having lost their last two matches and conceded seven goals in doing so whilst Town have taken only one point from their last twelve.

Fifth place Dereham Town travel to Tilbury. The Magpies know that a win could send them top- they are but two points behind Grays- whilst the Dockers finally seem to be getting back to their best, having won their last two matches and began climbing the table. The Magpies lost an eleven goal Trophy thriller six-five last weekend, and Toby Hilliard, who got a hat trick, will undoubtedly hope to get another one and be on the winning side this time out!

Bury Town, in seventh, take on ninth place Aveley. Town seem to have almost found their rhythm again with seven points from the last nine, whilst the Millers walloped four goals past Barking eight days ago- their first win since the end of August but a performance which should have the top five looking over their shoulders.

Maldon & Tiptree have not had the start we expected, losing their last three matches. They look to start putting that right as they head to Brentwood Town today, thirteenth hosting tenth. The Blues have also had an up and down start to the campaign, and are without a win since August Bank Holiday Monday.

Stowmarket Town, in twelfth, head to winless Hullbridge Sports, who these days are under new management. Town spent the last two weeks departing the Cup and the Trophy, but were in very good form before that, whilst Sports have drawn two out of their last three and have given their fans signs of hope.

Basildon United fans will be in positive mood as Coggeshall Town come to call. The Bees are unbeaten in three and defeated Maldon and Tiptree last time out; whilst the Seed Growers haven’t really got going yet but have the talents of Sam Bantick to call upon, the mercurial forward having scored in their last four matches.

Haywards Heath Town and Ramsgate are the only unbeaten clubs remaining in the Pitching In Isthmian South East Division, with a point separating them. But they aren't the only ones with their eyes on the prize.
Can Uxbridge go three points clear? And we welcome back the Green Lions! We've seven matches in the South Central Division, including the return of Guernsey. Here's our preview.
