Worthing honour fallen soldier

Worthing

Ryman League Worthing held a minute's silence on Saturday for a former youth team star who's been killed in Afghanistan.

Before kicking off in their 3-2 win over Sittingbourne in Ryman South, players wearing black armbands led the tribute to Lance Corporal James Brynin who suffered a fatal gunshot wound while on patrol in Helmand province last Tuesday.

The 22-year-old, pictured centre, grew up in nearby Shoreham and played for Worthing in his teens before joining the Intellingence Corp in February 2011.

The soldier had already completed a tour of Afghanistan in 2012 and returned in August as an intelligence analyst working for a light electronic warfare team within the Brigade Reconnaissance Force of 7th Armoured Brigade.

A minute's applause was also held by the club's current youth team players during a fixture at Woodside Road on Sunday for Brynin. He'd also played for Horsham and a number of other local sides as well as making four appearances for the Sussex County FA U16s Representative side.

The Ryman League club and the Sussex County FA have both sent their condolences to the fallen soldier's family and friends.

A Worthing spokesman said: "Everyone at the club would like to extend their thoughts and prayers to James’s family and friends at this very difficult and sad time. We were proud and honoured to be able to pay our own tribute to a former player who gave his life serving his country."
