Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Dropped points by Hampton & Richmond Borough and Dulwich Hamlet have left the Ryman League's Premier Division title race wide open, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Hampton head the table now by only a point after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Earlsmead by lowly Hendon.

The Beavers trailed to a 27th minute Dave Diedhiou effort until Jamal Lowe equalised three minutes into the second half but Alan Dowson`s side were unable to find a winner.

Dulwich lost second place to East Thurrock United, who won 4-2 at Canvey Island, after only managing a 2-2 draw at Champion Hill against second-bottom Farnborough.

A crowd of 1,390 saw Boro get off to a great start when Bogdan Vastsuk opened their account as early as the fifth minute. Nyren Clunis equalised 13 minutes later and then right on the half-time whistle, Ashley Carew put the hosts in front. But instead of capitalising on that, Sam Pearce grabbed the visitors` leveller with 21 minutes to go.

A 25th minute sending-off of Canvey`s Lawrence Yiga was the turning point at The Prospects Stadium.

The Gulls led with goals from Tony Stokes after 13 minutes and Martin Tuohy three minutes later. But Yiga, under pressure from Sam Higgins, hauled down the division’s top scorer and was dismissed.

Higgins duly converted the resulting penalty and then four minutes before the break Lewis Smith pulled the Rocks level. Tom Wraight on 70 minutes and then Higgins again seven minutes from time punished the tiring Gulls.

Tonbridge Angels moved up to fourth above inactive Bognor Regis Town after spoiling Johnson Hippolyte`s first game as Staines Town manager.

However, the Swans didn`t help themselves as they ended the game with only nine-men. The visitors held out until five minutes into the second half when Jack Bennett handled the ball on the line and was dismissed. But Jack Turner saved Nathan Elder`s resulting penalty.

Sub Tommy Whitnell broke the deadlock to give Angels a 75th minute lead and Nick Wheeler made the points safe with a second three minutes from time, with Staines going down to nine with a stoppage time dismissal of sub Jeremy Boakye.

Sixth-placed Billericay Town missed the opportunity to move into the top five when they were held to a goalless draw at New Lodge by seventh-placed Kingstonian.

Eighth-placed Leiston slumped to a fourth straight defeat when a late goal saw visitors Wingate & Finchley seal a league 'double'.

The Blues, playing the second half with ten-men following Danny Cunningham's first half stoppage time sending-off, looked to be heading for a hard earned point before the 88th minute winner from sub Karl Oliyide.

Lewes remain bottom, ten points adrift of the safety-mark, after going down to a 2-1 defeat at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium against Enfield Town.

Corey Whitely gave Town a great start with a goal inside the opening three minutes. But then a minute before the end of normal time, Jonte Smith kept his cool to equalise from the spot, only for defender Ryan Doyle to pop up at the other end to win it for the home side.

Fourth-bottom VCD Athletic suffered a 6-1 hammering at the Moatside Stadium by Merstham, who have had some strange results of late.

This though was Charlie Penny`s day. He scored four times in the 7th, 71st, 80th and 94th minutes, sandwiched by efforts from Fabio Saraiva on 49 minutes and Neil Campbell on 21 minutes – Nwokeji Manga`s stoppage time penalty was little consolation for the Vickers.

Grays Athletic earned a best-of-five win at Mill Field against Harrow Borough.

The visitors took a 28th minute lead through Fejiri Okerabirhie. However, goals from Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson after 35 and 51 minutes and then Dumebi Dumaka on 68 minutes gave the Blues a 3-1 lead. Marc Charles-Smith pulled one back 10 minutes from time but Grays held out.

Struggling Needham Market picked up a point from a 1-1 Bloomfields draw with Metropolitan Police.

Billy Crook broke the deadlock to give the Met a 52nd minute lead that Jordan Patrick cancelled out 17 minutes from time.
