Skipper makes milestone appearance

By David Watters

AFC Sudbury have congratulated skipper Sam Clarke on making his 300th appearance for the Ryman North club.

Clarke, pictured, reached the milestone on Tuesday night when he came on as a substitute in his side's 4-2 win over Heybridge Swifts at King's Marsh.

The 28-year-old signed for the Suds at the start of the 2008-09 season from Great Wakering Rovers before quickly establishing himself as a tough-tackling midfield player and taking over the captaincy in October 2010.

But for a couple of bad arm injuries, Clarke would probably be nearer 400 games by now and proud officials say they are already looking forward to the Billericay-based electrician making 377 appearances to take Paul Beeston's record as their all-time appearance holder.

Clarke came on to help Jamie Godbold's side maintain their push for the top of the table when they defeated bottom markers Swifts with a hat-trick from Sam Bantick and a fourth from Luke Callander despite being reduced to ten men.
