A good day to be away!

By Ian Townsend

Sudbury, Lowestoft and Grays win on the road as the Yellows lead extends to four points once more. It’s our Pitching In Isthmian North round up.

Our leaders, AFC Sudbury, started the day with a one point lead at the top of the table following Hashtag United’s walloping of East Thurrock United on Friday night. The Yellows, with only one defeat all season and nine wins from their previous ten, were on the road to a side who seem to have forgotten how it feels to win, Witham Town- so it was little surprise when the visitors went ahead, Josh Mayhew converting from the spot on twenty three minutes. Mayhew added a second- this one from open play- eleven minutes after half time, and that turned out to be that, the Yellows restoring their four point cushion. Image from Steve Screech.

Heybridge Swifts were on the road to take on bottom side Coggeshall Town. The visitors, without defender Darren Phillips who left for the bright lights of Faversham Town on Friday, must have been favourites given the Seed Growers were still without a win all season, but the hosts have looked much improved of late and thwarted Swifts hope of three points, the match ending goalless. Swifts slip to fourth.

Stowmarket Town hosted our match of the day as fourth took on fifth, Lowestoft Town the visitors. The Trawler Boys took an early lead, Louis McIntosh scoring after just seven minutes, and they doubled it a minute before half time, Adam Hipperson making it two. Hipperson added another just before the hour to make it a long way back for the hosts, and the Trawler Boys climb to third as Stow slip out of the top five.

Grays Athletic made the trip to Maldon & Tiptree looking to crash back into the top five, and protecting a record which had seen them win their last four- and indeed five of their last six. It took more than an hour for the opening goal to arrive, and it went to the visitors, Sam Bantick scoring his seventeenth goal of the season. Seven minutes later Bantick had another, and that was enough to see the visitors climb to fifth and end the Jammers winning run.
