AB1 Golden Gloves Awards- February 2023

By Ian Townsend

It’s time to consign the shortest month of the year to the back of the net, but in doing so let’s honour some people who let very little else in there!

It’s time to recognise our best defences of February! Please note, the outcomes are all calculated on statistics in league matches.

Premier Division

We’ve already dropped off a trophy at Parkside this morning, but it seems it seems we’ll have to pay another crossing charge and head back through that tunnel! Aveley not only won each of their five matches in February, but they kept four clean sheets and conceded only one goal- indeed, perhaps we should also honour Marcel Barrington of Herne Bay for scoring it, because he was given no other reason to remember that particular afternoon! Jonathan North was the keeper who decided “none shall pass” in wins over Bowers & Pitsea, Lewes, Kingstonian and Potters Bar Town, and now he has a fabulous new pair of gloves in recognition of his efforts. Many congratulations!

North Division

It hasn’t been the most positive of seasons for Brentwood Town, but February saw an upturn at the Arena- and it was built upon rock solid foundations. The month saw six unbeaten matches, three clean sheets and only three goals conceded, and the man with the golden gloves was Blues number one Melvin Minter. Melvin, we can’t guarantee that your new gloves will also be golden, but we hope you enjoy them- they are greatly deserved.

South Central Division

Merstham may have been at the wrong end of the table this season, but in recent months they’ve become incredibly difficult to defeat- and one of the reasons for that has been the form of keeper Filip Chalupniczak. February saw the Moatsiders lose only once in six matches, despite taking on many of our promotion candidates, and it’s fair to say that the presence of Filip between the sticks is one of the chief reasons why they still have a chance of getting out of trouble. Many congratulations to Filip on this award, and the best of luck for the rest of the campaign.

South East Division

It doesn’t seem long ago that the idea of delivering an award to Sittingbourne would have looked more than unlikely, but here we are, off to Woodstock Park! The turnaround for the Brickies under new boss Ryan Maxwell has been incredible, and built on very strong foundations. February saw six matches with only one defeat and three clean sheets, and Harley Earle takes our plaudits for his work between the sticks. Many congratulations to Harley, to all at the club, and to the occupants of Blakey’s Shed!

Thanks to AB1 Goalkeeping for being our sponsors. You can take a look at their magnificent products- and they don’t just sell gloves- by heading HERE.

Premier League winner and international goalkeeper Asmir Begovic will be best known for his work between the posts, particularly for Stoke City, Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth. But he also has his own company- AB1 Goalkeeping- who provide magnificent products for discerning goalkeepers everywhere- and we are lucky enough to have them as sponsors of our Golden Gloves Award. As they explain:

'AB1 Goalkeeping was the brainchild of one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers, Asmir Begovic. With his 15 years’ experience playing at the highest levels of top-flight international football, plus a development team with over 20 years’ experience of developing first-class goalkeeping products, we have a range of equipment to suit all levels of the game, from Grass Roots Football to the Premier League.'
