FA Cup round-up | Hashtag hit TEN as 26 Isthmian sides progress
There were crushing victories for Hashtag United, Whitstable Town and Windsor & Eton, among others, as a number of Step 4 Isthmian League sides booked their spot in FA Cup first round qualifying over the weekend.
The Tags raced into a 5-0 lead inside 36 minutes before visitors Enfield replied with their only goal two minutes later.
However, five further second-half goals ensured the hosts secured a crushing 10-1 victory to advance to the next round.
With 5-0 thrashings of Newhaven and North Leigh respectively, Whitstable Town and Windsor & Eton delivered their own standout performances in front of home crowds.
The Oystermen advanced thanks to braces from Robbie Rees and Jack Nelson, plus a final goal from Henry Young, while Windsor & Eton broke the hearts of Oxfordshire-based North Leigh courtesy of Jack Mazzone’s hat-trick.
The centre-forward has been in sparkling form with six goals already this season, and his fine form paved for the way for another impressive win before goals from Ben Hutchings and Harvey Power-Nash completed the job.
Gorleston also easily made their way through with a 6-1 victory against Mildenhall Town.
A double from Harley Black, plus efforts from Keller Spencer, Aaron Bullent, Luke Johnson and Ryan Curtis, ensured the home fans were treated to a flurry of goals at the Wellesley Recreation Ground.
It was a similar story for Newmarket Town, despite being made to work hard by visitors St Neots Town.
Prince Mutswunguma opened the scoring in the 67th minute for Michael Shinn’s side, before a late double from Josh Lee, either side of Theo Goddard’s long-range finish, sealed a 4-0 triumph at the NYO Stadium.
Losing 5-1 to Bromley-based Petts Wood & Holmesdale, one of the shocks of the weekend came at Grand Drive as Raynes Park Vale were dumped out of the competition at home.
After conceding three goals before the break, substitute Shamal Edwards’ 47th minute tap-in was not enough to breathe life into the tie as the visitors added two further goals to seal victory.
Saturday’s result caps off a miserable week for Hayden Bird’s side, who lost 7-0 to Hendon in the Isthmian South Central on Tuesday night.
The aforementioned Hendon continued their positive momentum with a 4-0 drubbing of Hertford Town.
Meanwhile, fellow Isthmian South Central sides Cobham and Littlehampton Town faced off at the Reg Madgwick Stadium.
Dion Jarvis put Littlehampton ahead inside 24 minutes, before hosts Cobham responded emphatically in the second half to clinch a 3-1 win.
Ryan Marklew, Dean Rule and substitute Reis Stanislaus scored three unanswered goals for Craig Lewington’s side after the break to secure safe passage to the next round.
A battle of the Isthmian South East saw Peacehaven & Telscombe resoundingly beaten 4-1 by Margate, while Isthmian North outfit Cambridge City edged past league rivals AFC Sudbury at home.
George Chenery cancelled out Freddie Hockey’s opener, before Charlie Royle hit the winner eight minutes into the second half to clinch a 2-1 victory.
It has been a miserable start to the season for Phil Weavers’ side, who sit 20th in the league with three defeats from their opening three fixtures.
Finally, over in Dorset, Winchester City’s growing momentum was extinguished by a brilliant Dorchester Town display.
Despite scoring 13 and conceding only one during their three consecutive league wins so far, the Isthmian South Central leaders were defeated 3-1 following a double from striker Ethan Taylor and a composed finish from debutant Henry Spalding.
Any preliminary round replays will take place this coming midweek.
The draw for first round qualifying will be released at 1pm on Monday 24 August, with Step 3 sides entering the competition at this stage.
First round qualifying will take place over the weekend of Saturday 5 September.
