It’s the top twenty attendance countdown!

It’s the top twenty attendance countdown!

We’re taking a look at average attendances across the League for the first half of the campaign- does your team feature?

You might have noticed- indeed, we’re sure you have- that our website has lots of fabulous statistics. There is actually a tab entitled ‘STATS’ which lets you read about goals, appearances and even disciplinary matters, and we suspect you’ve found that- but perhaps, because its under the MATCH INFO tab, you might have missed the attendance information, and it’s very much worth a read.

Our statistician, Neil Pilcher, produces a fantastically detailed report on attendances every month, which goes to our clubs and has the kind of depth that would bring delight to any self-respecting Statto, but we can’t fit all of that into an article- it’s twenty eight pages long! So instead we thought we’d give you our top twenty rundown, which you can perhaps read whilst the theme to ‘Pick of the Pops’ plays in your head (if you need a reminder of what that sounds like, it’s here!).

Ok, so in time honoured fashion and in reverse order, here are the Top Twenty Average Attendances from August to December. Just imagine that it’s being read by Alan Freeman.

20: Merstham- South East- 485

The Moatsiders ended the first half of the campaign with an average attendance of four hundred and eighty five, which puts them in twentieth place across our eighty eight clubs. Their best attendance was nine hundred and two, when they welcomed AFC Whyteleafe on November 1st- a match which the visitors won three-one.

19: Herne Bay- South East- 495

Bay ended the year with an average attendance of four hundred and ninety five, and in nineteenth place. Their highest attendance was indeed also the best for the Division, the one thousand and forty one who saw them lose three-one against Margate on the Saturday after Christmas.

18: Cambridge City- North- 533

City have gone from strength to strength since opening their fabulous new stadium last season, and their best attendance in the first half of their campaign arrived on Saturday December 27th, when eight hundred and eighty two watched them defeat Takeley three-one.

17: Carshalton Athletic- Premier- 534

The Robins highest attendance- and this is a pattern which you are likely to see repeated right through this countdown- arrived on December 27th, when they took on Dulwich Hamlet. The match ended one-one, and one thousand and nine turned up to watch.

16: Bognor Regis Town- South Central- 537

Bognor spent nearly all of the first half of the season playing their home matches at Chichester City, so this average is incredibly impressive on that basis. It was lifted, however, by the one thousand, six hundred and fifty five who watched them reopen Nyewood Lane against Fareham Town on- you guessed it- December 27th, a match which the Rocks won two-one.

15: Hastings United- South East- 646

Relegation from our top flight has impacted on attendances at Pilot Field, but the numbers are still incredibly good- and rather consistent. The best attendance for Hastings in the first four months of the campaign came way back in August, the eight hundred and sixty nine who watched them defeat Eastbourne Town two-nil. Rather uniquely, that was on a Wednesday evening.

14: Cray Wanderers- Premier- 653

Wanderers move to their very own stadium- Flamingo Park- last season increased their average crowd considerably, and it remains consistently high. Their best attendance this season was- of course- on December 27th, when they hosted local rivals Cray Valley PM, a match which the locals will remember for rather a long time as the hosts won five-nil. One thousand, two hundred and fifty four watched on.

13: Brentwood Town- Premier- 661

Brentwood have been a revelation since their arrival in our top flight in the summer, both on and off the pitch. The Blues best attendance came on September 20th, when they hosted Billericay Town in an Essex derby- one thousand, five hundred and seventy four turned up to watch, and we suspect most of them left delighted, as Brentwood won three-nil.

12: Burgess Hill Town- Premier- 682

The Hillians return to our top flight has been accompanied by a revamped stadium, a new pitch, and some fine free-flowing football. When they welcomed Dulwich Hamlet on November 15th, they also welcomed one thousand and twenty three, who got to watch a one-one draw.

11: Welling United- Premier- 710

Welling seem to be beginning to find their Isthmian feet, but although a fair proportion of the first half of the campaign didn’t bring much joy for their fans, they still turned out in numbers. The one thousand, four hundred and fifty who watched them lose two-nil to Cray Wanderers on November 15th was their best so far.

10: Lewes- Premier- 765

The Rooks have had an inconsistent campaign- the end of December saw them with nine wins and nine defeats, which tells its own story- but their supporters have, as always, remained loyal. The largest crowd they hosted was the one thousand, three hundred and fifty two who watched on as they defeated Burgess Hill Town three-nil on August Bank Holiday Monday.

9: Billericay Town- Premier- 792

We came into the campaign with the Blues installed as our title favourites, and whilst performances haven’t necessarily reflected that so far, we’re mindful that the season is a marathon not a sprint! Crowds have been consistently good, the best of them being the one thousand, one hundred and twenty three who watched them take on Wingate and Finchley on opening day back in August- a two-one win for the hosts.

8: Maldon and Tiptree- North- 835

The Jammers new owners have invested in the facilities and the team, and the results have been apparent both on and off the pitch, attracting a large number of new fans through the gate on a regular basis. They attracted a large proportion of the local area on December 27th, when they hosted their derby with Heybridge Swifts- and the home fans left with bragging rights after a one-nil win. One thousand, five hundred and ninety six were at that one.

7- Jersey Bulls- South East- 837

For quite a few years now a Channel Islands team has been high in this list- but this season that team is different, newcomers Bulls attracting the kind of crowds we used to see from their local rivals Guernsey. Our travelling fans have enjoyed their visits, and the home fans must have enjoyed the football- their side have been a fine addition to our ranks. The best crowd was the one thousand and three who watched Bulls defeat Deal Town on November 15th, the winning goal arriving deep into stoppage time.

6- Dartford- Premier- 1021

Our top six all have average attendance over one thousand, and promotion-chasing Darts come in sixth. Their best attendance came on Saturday November 1st, when they welcomed Welling United to Princes Park- a match which they won three-one. One thousand, five hundred and twenty five packed the terraces.

5: Folkestone Invicta- Premier- 1049

Our league leaders spent the opening weeks of the campaign playing their home matches at Margate whilst work on their Alcaline Stadium was completed, but they returned to a brand new pitch, a revamped stadium, and consistently fabulous crowds. Their best attendance of the first four months of the campaign came on December 6th, when they welcomed Brentwood Town in a top two clash- a tight affair won one-nil with an Ade Yusuff penalty. One thousand, four hundred and fifty three enjoyed that one- or at least most of them did.

4: St Albans City- Premier- 1092

The Saints have had an inconsistent start to the season, but their fans have remained committed nonetheless, and will still expect a successful second half of the campaign and a promotion challenge. Their best attendance was when they welcomed Wingate and Finchley on the Saturday after Christmas, two thousand, two hundred and twelve witnessing a two-nil victory.

3: Ramsgate- Premier- 1192

The Rams won our South East title last season with an ever-increasing fan base, and they’ve attracted some rather large numbers as they’ve made a steady start in our top flight. Their best crowd, you won’t be surprised to hear, watch on as they took on Folkestone Invicta on December 27th, two thousand, two hundred and sixty eight witnessing a stoppage time three-two win for the visiting stripes.

2: Chatham Town- Premier- 1429

The Chats are having a fine campaign in League and FA Trophy, and will still believe that they can take our title. Always well supported, their biggest League crowd this season came as they welcomed Dartford on the last Saturday of 2025, three thousand and forty nine watching on as the Darts took the points in a two-one win.

1: Dulwich Hamlet- Premier- 2149

There are no alarms and no surprises here, as Hamlet remain- by some stretch- our best supported side. On the field the season so far has been a mixed bag, but on the terraces, as always, those in pink and blue have turned out in large numbers to support their heroes. The three thousand, three hundred and thirty four who watched them defeat St Albans City four-two on November 8th is the best attendance recorded in the League so far.

So there you go, you can now turn the music off, and perhaps give yourself a pat on the back if your club featured in our countdown. We’ll do this all again at the end of the campaign.
