Wingate Winners!
Wingate and Finchley defeat Ramsgate to claim the Velocity Cup
It took one hundred and nine minutes for the Velocity Cup Final to be graced with a goal at Parkside last night, and when that goal arrived it sent the silverware to North London.
There were chances at both ends in the first half, and the Rams had a goal disallowed for a foul before a double save from Charlie Granger kept the scores level. Wingate saw two efforts clear the bar, and after the break another shot just cleared the woodwork, Ruben Bartlett-Antwi the latest to try his luck for the Blues.
Mason Hunter saw a shot cleared off the line for the Rams, and at the other end the Blues almost managed a late winner, Ruben Bartlett-Antwi forcing a save from Dillon Addai before Addai was again equal to an effort from Camilo Restrepo- and into extra time we went.
The first extra half was tense and goalless, but the second extra half wasn’t goalless for long. Blues substitute Afi Adebayo was their hero, firing the ball into the roof of the net from twelve yards, and the Rams had eleven minutes to find a way back. They did their best, Harry Webster forcing a save from Grainger and Greg Cundle firing over, and then it was over. Wingate and Finchley had won the Velocity Cup for the second time in their history, and the first time since 2011!
Many congratulations to all at the club- and commiserations to the Rams.
