Can anyone catch the Curfews?

By Ian Townsend

With an eight point lead it’s beginning to look unlikely, but Marlow, Southall and Leatherhead won’t have given up yet. At the bottom, Binfield and Corinthian-Casuals are fighting hard for their Isthmian lives. It’s our South Central preview

With an eight point lead and a game in hand over the pursuing trio, it almost looks as if the title is Chertsey Town’s to lose- and they’ll hope to take a step closer to it as Northwood come to call. The Curfews are undefeated since mid September, and will be delighted to get back into action after being rained off since 24th February- although they will hope for a more positive outcome, as they came very close to another defeat in a four-four draw against South Park reigate, scoring the equaliser eight minutes into added time! A three match unbeaten run ended for the Woods as they lost narrowly to Hanworth Villa in midweek, and they lost the first meeting with the Curfews four-two in October.

Second place Marlow have lost two of their last three, their four-two defeat to Guernsey last time out the most surprising of those- but they still have eight wins from their last ten and will hope to get back to winning ways as Badshot Lea come to call. The visiting Baggies have found football matches hard to find of late, and this will be their first league game since February 17th- although they did play at Hashtag United in the Velocity Cup in midweek, falling to defeat against the Premier Division side only on penalties. They’ve lost only three of their last ten in the league, but five of those have ended in draws and they are four without a win. They came from two down to draw two-two with Marlow in January.

Third place Southall welcome Ascot United. The All have slipped to eleven points behind the leaders after a run of two wins from seven, but they are three unbeaten and will hope they’ve puit that sticky patch behind them. The visiting Yellas are five matches unbeaten- their best run of the season- and will be searching for revenge for a three-one home defeat in November.

Fourth place Leatherhead welcome Met Police to Imber Court. The Tanners have lost only two of ten but haven’t looked particularly convincing of late- although despite that have a ten point cushion between themselves and sixth place. Met have only one win from four- although you could just as easily say they’ve three wins from six! They start the weekend in sixteenth, fourteen points clear of the bottom two. When the sides met in November, the Tanners hit four without reply.

Raynes Park Vale, in fifth, are on the road to Uxbridge. With only four points between themselves and Westfield, and the Woking side with a game in hand, Vale will hope to bounce back from defeat in their last match- but as that was a fortnight ago they’ve probably forgotten it already! Uxbridge have lost only one of their last five, and have won their last two to nil, whilst scoring five, so will be determined to keep that form going.

Sixth place Westfield are looking to narrow the gap on Raynes Park Vale as they battle for a play off spot, and they welcome Hanworth Villa to Woking Park. Field are without a win in tree- although they did draw the last two- whilst Villa, play off Finalists last season, are five unbeaten and have won their last three, finally beginning to display last seasons form. Twelve points away from the top five, if they are to go on a run they’ll need that to continue- and they’ll hope to do the double over Field, after defeating them four-two in November.

We’ve eighth v seventh as South Park Reigate welcome Hartley Wintney, the hosts nine points away from the top five, the visitors seven. Sparks have gone four without a win, whilst the Row haven’t played since their victory over Sutton Common Rovers on February 17th, a match which ended a three game losing streak. The last time they met they delivered a goalless draw, another one of those will do neither side much good if they still retain play off hopes.

Thatcham Town play host to Binfield. The Kingfishers defeated Binfield five-three in November, two of the Moles goals coming in added time, but they might find this a more difficult encounter. Thatcham have one defeat from six, whilst Binfield have one defeat from five, but have three draws from their last four- and with a seven point gap between themselves and safety need to start turning one point into three if they are to have a chance of survival.

Sutton Common Rovers, who start the weekend in fourteenth, have a fifteen point cushion between themselves and the danger zone- whilst their visitors, Ashford Town, are seven points worse off. Rovers have gone four without a win, whilst the Tangerines have one win from ten- and five points from the last thirty available. With the bottom two suddenly looking much improved, Town will hope to get back to winning ways and increase the gap between themselves and danger. The two sides drew one-one in their first meeting of the season, on November 11th.

Bottom side Corinthian-Casuals welcome Guernsey, this one kicking off at 2PM. Casuals are eight points from safety and are without a victory since mid November, but have drawn their last two and will be hoping to finally secure that elusive win. Guernsey, however, have won three of their last four, look to be full of confidence, and -of course- defeated title chasing Marlow last time out, so are unlikely to be pushovers. The first meeting between the sides this season was a one-one draw.
