Can the Trawler Boys hit the top?

By Ian Townsend

Lowestoft Town have the chance to continue their one hundred percent record- and hit the summit. We’ve also got Sudbury and Swifts in Cup replay action against National League opponents, and an all-North Trophy encounter

Lowestoft Town have been magnificent this season, winning each of their four league matches, scoring eleven goals and conceding only two. The Trawler Boys are on the road to Wroxham, a road they’ll get used to this week as they are back there again in the FA Trophy on Saturday. The Yachtsmen are still looking for their first league win, but will be buoyed by the four-one thumping they gave East Grinstead Town in the FA Trophy last week. A win for Town will take them top of the table.

Another side who could technically hit the summit are Hashtag United, although they’d need to win by quite a substantial margin at Maldon & Tiptree to have any chance of that. The Tags got back to winning ways against Tilbury at the weekend, whilst the Jammers have had a dreadful start to the season, losing every league match. They’ve been knocked out of Cup and Trophy in the last week, losing three nil to both Ware and Hornchurch.

Tilbury could climb into the top five with a win over Hullbridge Sports. The Dockers defeat against the Tags was their first League defeat of the campaign, whilst Sports have started the season disastrously, losing all four league matches and departing both Cup and Trophy at the first hurdle. That said, they started last season in similar form and came good in the end, so their fans will be hoping for another resurrection in the near future! Last season’s meetings between the two saw the Dockers take six points, score seven goals, and concede none.

East Thurrock United and Brentwood Town meet at Rookery Hill. The Rocks have lost every league match so far this season, although they have won three times in Cup and Trophy; whilst the visiting Blues have yet to hit last season’s heights and won their first match of the season on Saturday, defeating Gorleston three-nil.

Basildon United welcome Great Wakering Rovers. Both sides could do with some points, as both have only one league win this season. The Bees lost narrowly- and according to their supporters, unluckily- at Bury Town on Saturday, whilst Rovers were being thumped by visitors Witham Town, losing four-nil. The last match between the two- in Basildon- was won comprehensively by Rovers, three-nil- whilst the Bees won their other meeting last season four-one.

AFC Sudbury welcome St Albans City after their one-one draw in the FA Cup on Saturday, whilst Heybridge Swifts travel to face Braintree Town after ending their first match with the same scoreline. Both sides remain unbeaten in the League. The Yellows only defeat came in a Trophy shootout, whilst Swifts are unbeaten in all competitions.

The FA Trophy sees Gorleston welcome Coggeshall Town.
