Finally, we have a three-way battle for top spot!

By Ian Townsend

After months of Northwood dominance, any slip up could see Marlow or Basingstoke Town take over at the top. It’s our Pitching In Isthmian South Central preview.

Rather appropriately given our current weather, Northwood’s promotion charge seems to have hit the skids. The Woods have lost their last two without scoring a goal of their own, and they travel to Sutton Common Rovers probably needing three points to stay top of the pile. Rovers have lost their last four and slipped to within four points of the bottom four, so have a similar need for points- albeit for different reasons.

Marlow are only a point behind the leaders, and have a game in hand. Nineteen points from their last twenty four- the only defeat coming by a single goal against another of our form clubs, Southall- have seen the side from the Alfred David Ground climb to second place, and they’ve won their last three matches without conceding a single goal. They travel to South Park, who beat the leaders away from home last weekend but have seen their previous good home form go missing, losing their last two at Whitehall Lane.

Basingstoke Town are our champions of entertainment of late. Two points off the top with a game in hand, Stoke have a difficult match in prospect at eighth place Southall, but could go top if they can win it. They’ve won their last five, and scored twenty goals in the process. Hall have only one defeat from their last ten, and could find themselves inside the top five were they to collect another three points. Postponed.

Walton & Hersham have hit a sticky patch. The fourth place Swans have five wins from their last ten, but each one of those wins was followed immediately by a defeat- which looks pretty in red and green on the form table but won’t be doing anything for the fans blood pressure. They are at home to Guernsey tomorrow, the Green Lions finding themselves second from bottom. Until last week we would have been pointing out that Guernsey are much better away than at home, but last week they ruined that by losing eight-nil at Basingstoke.

Westfield start the weekend in fifth place. The Woking side welcome the Tangerines, Ashford Town making the trip to Surrey. Field seem to have got themselves back on an even keel after winning at Sutton Common Rovers last weekend, whilst the Tangerines have won one- and lost five- of their last six.

Binfield are only a point outside the top five. The Moles welcome Trophy heroes Uxbridge, and will hope that their visitors are distracted by next weekend’s trip to Dagenham and Redbridge. Uxbridge have been inconsistent in the league, with only four points from the last fifteen available, whilst the Moles are three unbeaten and seem to be rediscovering their early season form. Postponed.

Chertsey Town have fallen off the pace in recent weeks, and start the weekend in an unaccustomed lowly position- ninth- albeit only two points away from the top five. The Curfews are on the road, facing a side who need the points for entirely different reasons, third bottom Tooting & Mitcham United. A win for the Terrors could take them out of the bottom four, but they’ve only managed such a result twice this season- although they have looked more resolute when drawing their last two. The Curfews have won only one of their last four.

Hanworth Villa welcome Leatherhead to west London. The Tanners are eight points and four places behind their hosts, and have only one win from their last five; whilst the Villains have taken only one point from their last two matches but were in good form prior to that.

Chipstead have been superb of late- six matches without defeat, a run which includes big wins over Hanworth Villa and Ashford Town and a more modest but still impressive win over Chertsey Town. The Chips are on the road to Thatcham Town, the Kingfishers yet to find any consistent form but desperate for points, as they are only a point outside the bottom four.

Fourth bottom Bedfont Sports welcome bottom side Merstham to the end of the runway, both sides looking upwards after some more positive recent results. Both sides are three unbeaten, and both have taken one win and two draws from their three matches.
