Doug Loft- a man with his own day named after him- sails to the seaside

Margate have confirmed the signing of midfielder Doug Loft, who has spent the last two curtailed seasons plying his trade at Billericay Town in National League South.

Doug first came to prominence at Hastings United, from where he was snapped up by Brighton and Hove Albion. He became something of a cult figure at the club, selling copious amounts of merchandise and having his own day named after him- Doug Loft Day, which was first celebrated by Seagulls fans away at Hartlepool United on25th October 2008. Perhaps Gate fans might like to revive it?

He then spent the best part of five years with Port Vale, during that period playing close to two hundred times and picking up Player of the Year, Away Travel Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Season awards during 2011-12. He led his side to promotion to League One the following season.

He moved on to Gillingham, and then to Colchester United and Shrewsbury Town before signing for Billericay Town in the summer of 2019.
