Gulls climb continues- whilst Blues win a shootout

By Ian Townsend

Canvey overcame a strong Folkestone challenge to climb to eleventh, whilst Billericay needed a shootout to defeat Cheshunt in the Velocity Cup

Canvey Island continued their climb up the table with a third win from four- but they didn’t find it easy against Folkestone Invicta in Essex last night.

Invicta could have taken the lead when an effort from distance by Adeyinka Cole clattered the Gulls post on twenty minutes, but the first goal had soon gone the other way, a cross from Conor Hubble finding Bradley Sach, and Sach finding the back of the net. Invicta soon hit back, and went in at the break level, a Cole corner finding Jake Goodman, who turned it home.

The hosts were ahead again on sixty seven minutes. Hubble came close to getting a second for his side, hitting the bar, but the ball bounced back kindly, finding Charlie Edwards who finished well. Deep into added time the visitors clattered the woodwork once more, but the points stayed at home, and the Gulls are up to eleventh.

Our scheduled match at Lewes last night was postponed on Monday when it was discovered that bits of the Dripping Pan had blown away- all should be fine for the visit of Margate at the weekend.

We had an all-Premier match in the Velocity Cup, and it was Billericay Town who came through it to earn a home Quarter Final tie against Chatham Town- but they needed a penalty shootout to do it. The Blues were at Cheshunt, and the Ambers too the lead as early as the third minute, Nnamdi Nwachuku with the opener. It was a lead they held until twelve minutes from time, when the in-form Alfie Cerulli, introduced from the bench, got his twelfth of the season- and his fifth in four matches- to set up a penalty shootout. The visitors took the spoils, winning the twelve yard lottery by five goals to four.
