It’s any two from three!

By Ian Townsend

Wingate and Finchley, Horsham and Billericay Town. Two of this trio will be Play Off Semi Finalists next week, but which two? We’re about to find out!

It’s the last Saturday of the regular season, and our focus is on events at New Lodge, the Camping World Community Stadium and the Maurice Rebak Stadium, where three sets of hosts look for three vital points.

Sixth place Billericay Town know that their fate is out of their hands. The Blues welcome another set of Blues, Margate, and need to win whilst hoping that at least one of Wingate or Horsham fall to defeat. With the latter duo having a three point advantage nothing else will do- the North London Blues and the Hornets need but one point apiece to guarantee their top five spot.

Billericay are in fine form, and have won their last five- but will that poor run in February and March cost them dear? Their visitors, Margate, are also in decent form, with only one defeat from seven, but barring a miracle it also looks like their revival has come too late. Gate find themselves three points behind Cheshunt in the race to avoid relegation, and with a significantly poorer goal difference- and it’s difficult to believe that, even if the Ambers lose at Hashtag United and Gate win at New Lodge, a fourteen goal deficit can be made up.

Billericay defeated Gate three-one at Hartsdown Park in November.

Wingate and Finchley have had a fine season, and will hope to guarantee their play off place by avoiding defeat against Carshalton Athletic. The Blues have lost only two of their last ten and defeated the Robins at Colston Avenue in November, and their visitors have taken only one point from their last three, but the hosts won’t want to forget that Athletic were mounting their own play off challenge until relatively recently and will want to end the season on a high. The last thirteen meetings between the sides have seen six wins for the Robins, six for the Blues, and one lone draws.

Horsham welcome relegated Concord Rangers looking for that single point. The Hornets have stuttered a little of late, with three wins and three defeats from their last six matches, but will hope to have enough left in the tank to overcome a side who have won only three times on the road this season. That said, until their four-nil hammering at home to Bognor last time out the Beachboys were looking rather revitalised, three unbeaten- as if relegation had taken the pressure off- and they’ll be under no pressure at all this weekend, whilst the Hornets are likely to be rather tense!

Fifth bottom Cheshunt travel to Hashtag United, the Tags saying an emotional goodbye to the Len Salmon prior to their move to Aveley next season. The Ambers just need to avoid a rather unlikely hammering to retain their Premier Division status, given that relegation rivals Margate are three points and fourteen goals behind them- and, of course, even Cheshunt defeat will only make a difference if Gate can somehow find a way to wallop play of chasing Billericay Town elsewhere in Essex. The odds of survival are very good indeed for the Ambers, but we’ll wait until mathematically certain before confirming their safety! The Tags have lost their last two- and the sides drew one-one in North London in November.

Cheshunt’s neighbours Enfield Town have a rather different scenario for their last game of the season. The Towners know that they have qualified for the Play Offs, but they face the side two points above them, Chatham Town, aware that victory will send them into second place and mean that their Dave Bryant Stadium will host them all the way to the Final, should they reach it. That’s a big incentive, but of course it is also a big incentive for the Chats, who have occupied second place for months and certainly won’t want to let it go now! The Towners have only one defeat in ten, whilst Chatham have lost two of their last three- and neither side will want to give the other any psychological advantage given they could quite possibly meet again in the Play Off Final ten days later.

Champions Hornchurch will pick up the trophy after their match with bottom side Kingstonian, and the Urchins need three more points to reach the magic one hundred. If they could somehow score seven they’d also reach one hundred goals, and we suspect that both records will be on their mind as they take the field.

Elsewhere, Bognor Regis Town will look to end the season with a third win in a row as they welcome Folkestone Invicta, who have drawn their last two and are without a win in three. Canvey Island are at home to Hastings United, the Gulls looking for a fourth win in a row, whilst United look to end a positive season with a victory that will confirm seventh place- one place higher than they managed last season.

Relegated Haringey Borough will want to sign off with a second win in a row as they welcome eighth place Lewes, the Rooks having won their previous four and saying goodbye to manager Tony Russell; whilst Dulwich Hamlet will undoubtedly welcome their usual large crowd as they play host to Cray Wanderers. Wands have won only one of their last ten and are hoping to avoid a fifth defeat in a row.

Whitehawk will hope to end the season with a win which may catapult them into the top ten. The Hawks have been in fine form, seven unbeaten as they welcome Potters Bar Town, whilst the Scholars have ended the campaign with something of a whimper, losing eight of their last nine.
