Late Villains halt the Westfield charge…

By Ian Townsend

…whilst the Tanners trip up Uxbridge. It's our Pitching In Isthmian South Central round up from a rather damp Tuesday night.

And then there were two. After the match between Binfield and Guernsey was postponed, we were left with two matches in Pitching In Isthmian South Central last night, and two turned out to be a rather popular number as it was the number of goals scored by three of the four sides in action.

Westfield have been in fine form of late. They went into last night’s match at Hanworth Villa knowing that a win would take them second and narrow the gap on leaders Northwood to four points- with a game in hand. It looked very much as if they had that win wrapped up- but it turned out that such thoughts were premature, as the Villains hit back right at the death. Hanworth went ahead on nineteen minutes, Jonathan Hippolyte opening the scoring, but Westfield quickly hit back and were ahead by the break, courtesy of a Troy Walters double. Walters hadn’t even started the match, but was thrust into action after an injury to Tristan Abideen-Goodridge on eleven minutes and certainly made the most of the opportunity, taking his tally for the season to eight.

As we approached the end of the game it looked as if the Woking side had done enough, but Hippolyte had other ideas, and ensured that his side got a point and stretched their unbeaten run to five matches.

Leatherhead had followed each of their last two wins with an immediate defeat, so we speculated that they were due a win, and they duly delivered at Uxbridge. An own goal from a corner got the underway just after the hour mark, and despite the best efforts of the hosts the Tanners made sure four minutes from time, Lewis Perch making it two-nil as his side remain fifteenth, but open up a six point gap on the bottom four. That said, we suspect Tanners boss Hayden Bird is more focused on the top five, nine points further ahead.
