Millers v Becks in a top five clash- and FOUR Sussex derbies- are our South East highlights

By Ian Townsend

Beckenham Town could go second- or Cray Valley PM climb to fourth- whilst all eight of our Sussex sides are in action against each other. Elsewhere, Hythe Town welcome Sittingbourne to the seaside

Cray Valley, who hold on to fifth place only on goal difference, may need to rediscover their form if they are to remain in the top five this evening. The Millers, who have taken only one point from their last twelve, welcome Beckenham Town- their visitors also experiencing something of a blip, without a win in three matches. Becks achilles heel this season has been their away form, with six defeats on the road, whilst the Millers home form had been superb until this month, when they fell to one-nil defeats against Chichester City and Sevenoaks Town. A goalless draw was the outcome when the two sides met in September.

Lancing will travel along the coast road that separates them and Brighton Marina this evening, and after getting stuck in traffic outside the Brighton Centre and by the Palace Pier will arrive at the Enclosed Ground searching for a third consecutive victory. Hosts Whitehawk have only one win from their last five, but you could look at that another way and point out that they have a three match unbeaten run! Whatever your perspective, the Hawks are the meat in a three club forty point sandwich, but will climb back into the top five with victory. The Lancers could put nine points between themselves and the bottom four with an away win- or perhaps five points between themselves and the top five!

Chichester City have been in fine form of late, and have closed to within four points of the top five. Chi welcome Littlehampton Town to the land of cathedrals, theatres and roundabouts, the Golds on their worst run of the season with only one win from five. City, in contrast, have taken thirteen points from their last fifteen. A one-one draw was the outcome when they met in September.

Hythe Town, on their best run of the season with four wins from their last five, welcome Sittingbourne to the seaside. The Cannons have defeated promotion-chasing Whitehawk and Chatham Town recently, whilst the Brickies have looked much better with only one defeat from their last five, but start the day five points from safety.

East Grinstead Town and Three Bridges meet in an A264 derby. The Wasps are two points clear of their closest rivals but neither will consider themselves comfortable. Bridges have only one defeat from their last seven but by the same token are four without a win, having drawn their last three. East Grinstead have taken seven points from their last nine and, rather like their visitors, are much better at home than away- but they inflict a rare home defeat on their rivals back in October.

Finally, we have a Mid Sussex derby- and if possible it’s even more crucial than usual. Haywards Heath Town, our hosts, are one place and two points above visitors Burgess Hill Town having played a game more- and given the Hillians are in the bottom four would love to keep them there with a home victory tonight. Neither side are in good form, Town without a win in four, Hill without a win in eight, but an away win would plunge the hosts into trouble so this one will be tense! Their last meeting, in September, ended in a draw.
