Monday Night Football

By Ian Townsend

Rather unusually, we have not just one, but two matches for your delight this evening. So some roads lead to Hashtag United (well, Bowers and Pitsea) and others to Enfield (well, Bishop’s Stortford). Preview here.

It’s Semi-Final time in the Velocity Cup, and we’ve an all-Premier clash at the Len Salmon tonight as Hashtag United take on Haringey Borough.

The Tags are four unbeaten in the league, defeating both Margate and Billericay Town four-two in their last two matches, and reached the Semi-Final after wins over Badshot Lea (on penalties), Brightlingsea Regent and Concord Rangers. They will be favourites not only because of their home advantage and good recent record, but because they hammered tonight’s opponents four-one when the sides last met in the League on Boxing Day.

Borough, however, will by boosted by winning three games in a row, following two one-nil league victories over Cheshunt and Margate and their Quarter Final win over Whitehawk. As well as the Hawks, they’ve defeated Potters Bar Town and Ipswich Wanderers to reach this stage- and of course they’ll be motivated by revenge for that aforementioned Christmas loss.

Whoever loses tonight- and someone has to- they’ll have a speedy chance of revenge as they meet again in the League on Easter Monday, April 1st.

Off to Bishop’s Stortford next, and in Pitching In Isthmian North Enfield welcome Redbridge. The E’s are in eighteenth place, just above the drop zone, but with a thirteen point lead over the Stowmarket Town and Stow still to win a match there would have to be a big turnaround in fortunes if our bottom side were to have a chance of escape. That said, Enfield will want their survival to be kept entirely in their own hands, but with six defeats in a row they’ll want their form to improve as quickly as possible. They were perhaps a little unlucky in losing one-nil at play off chasing Brentwood Town on Saturday.

The travelling Motormen took a five match winless run to play off hopefuls Walthamstow on Saturday and left with a comfortable two-nil win, which will have boosted their confidence no end. The Motormen are six points better off than their hosts, but Saturday’s victory was their first on the road this season. They have, however, already scored three goals against Enfield, in a comfortable home win back in September.

Both matches kick off at 7.45 PM- but remember, if you’re heading to Enfield, cash only at the turnstiles.
