More goals please!

By Ian Townsend

The opening day saw an average of more than four goals a game, so here's hoping for more of that on this latest Pitching In isthmian South Central Saturday. Here's our preview.

Ascot United have been unstoppable in the Cup but will hope to pick up their first league points of the season as they welcome Guernsey. The Green Lions had a poor 22-23 by their standards but started this campaign with a comeback win and will be hoping to stave off jet lag.

Binfield may have won in the FA Cup last weekend but that victory is sandwiched between two six-nil defeats, the latest of those arriving in the Velocity Cup at Badshot Lea in midweek. Still, they’ll be glad to be at home for the first time this season, and welcome Chipstead, who bounced back from Cup defeat to hammer Hartley Wintney six-two on the opening weekend. The two sides have met only four times, and have one win each.

Corinthian-Casuals started life in the South Central Division with a hammering at Northwood, and took another of those on the road at Uxbridge in a midweek FA Cup replay, so will be happy to be at home as Marlow come to call. Marlow lost their opening league fixture by the only goal, but have since scored five without reply in two cup fixtures and won’t be short of confidence.

Hanworth Villa play host to Raynes Park Vale. The Villains started the campaign with a narrow defeat against Chertsey Town but bounced back to score six in the Cup last weekend, whilst Vale’s last two matches have ended three-two, in their favour at Ascot on the opening day and against them in the Velocity Cup at Badshot Lea in midweek.

Hartley Wintney picked up their first win over the campaign with Cup victory last weekend. They meet a former Southern League rival, Met Police, the boys in Blue still looking for their first win in any competition. The two sides have met seven times since Met first departed our ranks, with four wins for this weekend’s visitors and one draw, which happened the last time they met, in February.

South Park Reigate and Leatherhead meet for the third time in a week. The first meeting ended all square before the Tanners squeezed through in a midweek replay, so the Sparks have an early chance of revenge at Whitehall Lane. Both sides picked up three points in their opening league matches, and both will hope to be involved in the promotion shake up at season end. The Sparks won both of last season’s meetings, and indeed the Tanners victory in midweek was their first in six attempts against these opponents.

Southall welcome a Badshot Lea side who will be buoyed by hitting six against Binfield in midweek- and by their performance in defeat against Lancing in the Cup last weekend. The All may have fallen to narrow defeat against Leatherhead on the opening day but won in the cup either side of that, and were rather difficult to defeat last season so will be hoping for that first league win.

Sutton Common Rovers had a fine start to their league campaign, hitting Met Police for four on opening day. Their opponents at Whyteleafe are Uxbridge, who play their first league match of the campaign but have been full of goals in the cup, having scored ten across three matches including five in defeating Corinthian-Casuals in a midweek replay. The last meeting between the two, in February, ended goalless.

Thatcham Town welcome Ashford Town. Both sides had fine starts to the season, the Kingfishers defeating Marlow and the Tangerines hitting six against Binfield. The last time the two sides met, in April, they delivered a six goal thriller that saw both take a point.

Westfield have been full of goals in cup competitions but will hope to pick up their first league points of the campaign as they host Chertsey Town. The Woking Park side followed their opening day defeat with three goals against Athletic Newham in the FA Cup and three more against Raynes Park Vale in the Velocity Cup; whilst the Curfews have a one hundred percent record in league and cup. The two sides have met six times since they both joined our South Central Division, and Westfield have only two points to show for those meetings.
