No Blues for Billericay

By Ian Townsend

Billericay Town- in red- won the Reposs Isthmian Women’s Cup in style

Last season Billericay Town Women were subjected to the cruelest of defeats in the Final of the Reposs Isthmian Women’s Cup, losing in a penalty shootout after a thoroughly entertaining match against Charlton Athletic Women that neither side deserved to lose. This season the Blues were determined to wipe out those bad memories, and they did it in some style, defeating Ashford United by five goals to nil.

The Blues were overwhelming favourites, given they play two levels higher than their opponents. That said, the side in green and white fought hard and kept their opponents at bay until the thirty sixth minute, when Ella Houghton got on the end of a ball from Ruby Sealey and finished well. That was that for the first half, but Sealey was also the architect of the second goal, Kayleigh Stead this time the grateful recipient making it two-nil nine minutes into the second half.

There were only nineteen minutes left when goal number three arrived, Maddie Biggs- who had only been on the pitch for six minutes- putting the game out of sight. The fourth, from Karissa Doo, was headed home five minutes from time, and the fifth, deep in added time, was another Maddie Biggs special.

Many congratulations to the Blues/Reds, who are pictured alongside our friends from Her Game Too- many thanks to Faye Hackwell for the image. Commiserations to all at United- we’re sure you’ll be back in the Final soon, and good luck for the rest of the season.
