Pitching In Isthmian League- supporters predictions 2021-22: Thatcham Town

It’s time to head to the South Central Division, where we visit new boys Thatcham Town. Matthew Smith is our guide.

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-20 (or 22) will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off. Matt gives us an anatomical guide to the Kingfishers.

1. Thinking about last season- what there was of it- were there any highlights for you?

For me it was the win Vs Melksham Town. We generally don’t beat Melksham at home but this was a superb performance. A 3-0 win with Conor Lynch grabbing a hat trick in treacherous conditions.

2. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2021-22 campaign?

Of those names confirmed by the club it has to be Brad Pagliaroli. A local lad, a likeable lad. Brad has had a few spells with the club but unfortunately a few niggling injuries hampered him somewhat last season. Hopefully we will get to see more of him this season. Harvey Harry is another to look out for should he re-sign.

3. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

Not knowing a great deal about the majority of the teams in the league makes it a tough call on how things will go. I’m under no illusions that it will be a challenging season - with what’s looking like a young and inexperienced squad I’d take a mid-table finish.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Do enjoy an away day and ticking off new grounds. Who doesn’t? Being new to the Isthmian League we will have plenty of opportunities to visit clubs for the 1st time. A group of us have hotels are booked for Guernsey - fingers crossed the fixture goes ahead as planned. Also looking forward to taking in our game against Basingstoke being played in…Basingstoke. After a year of ground sharing with Winchester it’s good to see them back playing in their town. Of the grounds I’ve been to before Binfield is a superb little jaunt - lovely club.

5. What is your favourite away ground?

Melksham have a really nice set-up. To be fair, if you’re able to watch a game at a ground with a beer then they are all favourites. Unfortunately this isn’t permitted at Thatcham.

6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

Erm, traditionally I guess it’s Hungerford Town although we’ve had some real battles against Bracknell Town over the years. Basingstoke are just up the road too.

7. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?

Get the train if possible. There’s a pub (The Swan) one side of the station and the ground is on the other. More pubs/restaurants are a 25mins walk away. Plenty of parking at the ground if travelling by car.

8. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?

Shane Cooper-Clark. The man scored goals for fun including the winner at Wembley in the FA Vase final. Honourable mentions for Tom Melledew and Gareth Thomas too - club legends.

9. Who will be in the top five at the end of the season?

Bracknell Town, Chertsey Town, Staines Town, Basingstoke Town, Marlow
