Pitching In Isthmian Supporters predictions 23-24: Lancing

By Ian Townsend

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. We’re off to the South East Division, and Lancing, in the company of Barry Sutton

1. Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?
Last season was full of late winners and 4 goal comebacks but, for me, it was two 1-0 wins at home to local rivals Chichester and Littlehampton that I enjoyed the most. It is always nice to win the A27 derbies.

2. And what was the worst moment?

The 4-1 defeat to East Grinstead in the FA Cup and the 4-0 defeat away at Beckenham both stand out. East Grinstead were a bit of a bogey team for us last season with former Lancer Matt Daniels coming back to haunt us, scoring three times in two games - something Matt has made a bit of a habit of! The first half away at Beckenham was also poor, one of the only times all season we looked second best.

3. Which member of your squad was your Player of the Season - and why?

Goalkeeper and fan favourite Alieu Secka. There is no better keeper in the division in my opinion. A great shot stopper who commands his area and comes up with crucial penalty saves. The fact that he is also one of the nicest guys you could meet is a bonus!

4. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2023-24 campaign?

Tyrone Madhani looks really sharp pre-season and looks full of confidence. We all know the quality Andrew Briggs brings in the middle of the park and new signing George Taggert has already won over the Culver Road faithful with his ability.

5. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

I think we'll improve on last season's highest ever finish of 13th - I'm going to say 10th. We've surprised everyone and exceeded expectations in both of our seasons in this division so don't be surprised if we punch above our weight again.

6. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

The opening league game is always one to look forward to and this season it is against Merstham who have a former crowd favourite Lorenzo Lewis in their squad. Lorenzo is fondly remembered here and will get a warm welcome. I'm also looking forward to visiting Horndean where my brother-in-law is from as family bragging rights will be up for grabs!

7. What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

I was really impressed with both the stadium and set up at Chatham last season. They are a club undoubtedly going places. Of the teams in our division this year, I always enjoy visiting Cray Valley - lovely clubhouse, lovely people.

8. If you regularly travelled away, which ground served the best food?

Easy one this - Burgess Hill. Proper butchers burgers, well worth the money. I'll miss the burgers at Faversham as well which I always enjoyed.

9. Choose your top five:

Ramsgate, Herne Bay, Sheppey United, Burgess Hill Town, Ashford United
