Pitching In Isthmian Supporters predictions 23-24: Grays Athletic (part one)

By Ian Townsend

We asked supporters of our Pitching In Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. We’re heading to Grays, in the company of Phil Boston

Pitching In Isthmian Supporters predictions 23-24: Grays Athletic (part one)

1. Thinking about last season, what were your highlights?

The win at Bury Town. To see all our support behind the goal, singing together for 90 minutes and cheering the lads on to a superb 4 1 win. After the game Bury fans said we were the best away supporters they’d seen all season.

2. And what was the worst moment?

Just falling short in the Play Of Semi Final at Sudbury. Playing great football all game until a controversial refereeing decision that changed the game. Seeing all of our players distraught at the final whistle.

3. Which member of your squad was your Player of the Season - and why?

For the 2nd season running our goalkeeper Danny Sambridge. Grays born and bred and ever present last season.

4. Moving on to your current squad- which players do you think will make a big impact during the 2023-24 campaign?

For me it’s Troy Osei-Bobie. Eighteen years old, came into the team at the end of last season and proved he belongs- and outstanding so far in pre-season. And of course, our returning manager Mark Stimson is a proven manager at this level.

5. Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?

Our aim is to get promoted automatically, but with teams having bigger budgets than us I’ll settle for a Play Off Semi Final at home.

6. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

The opening fixture! With four ex players in the Enfield team, including Sam Bantick our leading scorer last term, it should be a great game. I’m also looking forward to our coach trips to play the Suffolk teams- it’s always a great time travelling to them.

7. What is your favourite Isthmian away ground?

Unfortunately with Sudbury’s promotion it’s now Felixstowe- always a great reception from their supporters

8. If you regularly travelled away, which ground served the best food?

Last season it had to be our new landlords, Tilbury. ‘East Street Food’ is far and above anywhere else in the league.

9. Choose your top five:

Heybridge Swifts, Stowmarket Town, Grays Athletic, Brightlinsea Regent, Felixstowe and Walton Utd

Right, it's your turn! If you'd like to represent your club, please email Ian at townsendaround@gmail.com and you'll see your answers here soon.
