Saturday's Premier Division review

By David Watters

Staines Town produced the eye-catching result on the opening day of the Ryman League's Premier Division season on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Johnson Hippolyte`s side inflicted a 6-1 hammering on the Metropolitan Police at Imber Court.

The game was virtually all over as a contest by half-time as the Swans found themselves 4-0 up, courtesy of goals from De`Reece Vanderhyde after five minutes, Dan Brown three minutes later, Max Worsfold on 18 minutes and Tyrell Miller-Rodney on 24 minutes.

They took their foot off the gas rather after that and the Met reduced the arrears with a Darnell Smith own goal. But goals in the final eight minutes from sub Reece Tison-Lascaris and Jonathan Hippolyte completed the rout.

Newly-promoted sides Folkestone Invicta and Worthing and fancied Tonbridge Angels all recorded 3-0 opening day wins.

Neil Cugley`s Invicta saw off Harrow Borough at the Fullicks Stadium with goals from new signing Ben Pattie five minutes after half-time, Scott Heard after 67 minutes and Ian Draycott four minutes from time.

Even more impressive though was Worthing`s win at Hendon`s new Silver Jubilee Park. Looking for a positive start at their new ground, instead the Greens were beaten with goals from Reis Stanislaus just past the hour-mark, Harvey Sparks five minutes later and Stanislaus again with 17 minutes to go.

Angels were in front at Longmead against Wingate & Finchley after 25 minutes. Damien Scannell doubled their advantage 10 minutes later and it was 3-0 right on the stroke of half-time from striker Nathan Elder.

The other newly-promoted side, AFC Sudbury, had to make do with a point from their first ever Premier Division match at the Wardale Williams Stadium against another well-fancied outfit, Dulwich Hamlet.

Sam Clarke gave the new boys a great start with a goal inside the opening two minutes. But Kenny Beaney equalised after 37 minutes and just three minutes later, new recruit Kadell Daniel gave Hamlet the lead. But AFC earned a point with a 66th minute goal from striker Luke Callander.

It was a mixed start for relegated Lowestoft Town and Havant & Waterlooville.

The Trawlerboys achieved a very good 3-1 win at a Bognor Regis Town side who finished runners-up to Hampton & Richmond Borough last season. Chris Henderson put the visitors in front five minutes before half-time.

And then on the hour-mark, a Dan Beck own goal settled nerves for the Trawlerboys and a second for Henderson five minutes from time sealed victory, rendering James Crane`s late reply as just a consolation.

The Hawks suffered a defeat by the same scoreline at Victory Road in their first visit to Leiston.

Jack Ainsley gave the Coasters a 21st minute lead that Theo Lewis levelled 10 minutes later. Six minutes into the second half and Gareth Heath restored the home side`s lead, with Matt Blake immediately adding a third.

The other opening day winners were newly-promoted Harlow Town, who won 1-0 at The Harlow Arena against Kingstonian.

It was looking like ending goalless until striker Alex Read popped up to win it for the Hawks in stoppage time.

All the remaining matches finished as draws. Merstham surprised everyone last season and earned a useful point at New Lodge against Billericay Town.

Josh Oyinsan gave the hosts the lead on the hour-mark but Pat Cox`s 82nd minute penalty earned Hayden Bird`s side a share of the spoils.

Canvey Island looked to be heading for victory at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium against Enfield Town as they led through Ryan O`Rawe`s 74th minute opener going into injury-time before Tyler Campbell grabbed a last-gasp point for Town.

Tomi Adeloye gave Leatherhead a 48th minute breakthrough at Fetcham Grove against Grays Athletic. But recent recruit Lheureux Menga popped up with a 69th minute equaliser for Jamie Stuart`s side.

Needham Market took a 10th minute lead at Bloomfields against Burgess Hill Town. And that looked like being enough, until new signing Tyrell Richardson-Brown came off the bench to level matters six minutes from time.
