Second half blitz gives three points to the Gulls- and the Urchins could go four points clear tonight

By Ian Townsend

A fine win for Canvey halts Carshalton's table-topping hopes- and we've matches at Hornchurch, Billericay and Whitehawk tonight

Canvey Island ensured that Carshalton Athletic's winless run in all competitions extended to five matches- and that they couldn't hit the summit- by scoring three second half goals to take the points at Colston Avenue last night.

The Gulls seem to like travelling to Carshalton. Last February, goals from Bradley Sach and Charlie Edwards gave them a two-nil win, and last night they went one better. After a goalless first half the opener went to Sam Mvemba on fifty five minutes, and the same player waited only twelve minutes more to make it two. Any chance of a Robins comeback was halted two minutes from time, Tobi Tinubu making it three and ensuring that his side climbed up to fourth place.

Now, onto this evening.

Hornchurch have the chance to stretch their lead to four points, but they'll have to get the better of Hastings United to do it. The Urchins, superb in the league so far, have started October by departing both the FA Cup and FA Trophy so will be glad to get an early chance to get those defeats out of their system. United could climb as high as third with an away win, but they have also been a little out of sorts lately, only a County Cup win over Three Bridges lightening the gloom of four defeats in League, FA Cup and FA Trophy. The meeting between the sides at Bridge Avenue last season ended in a three-nil Urchins victory, and the meeting between the sides at Hastings Pilot Field went the same way.

Billericay Town can climb up to fourth if they can defeat Dulwich Hamlet. The Blues have only played twice in the league since August Bank Holiday Monday, took only one point from those two matches and have been better on the road than on their own patch, both defeats this season coming at New Lodge- although they did come from three-one down to defeat Felixstowe and Walton United in the Trophy at the weekend in front of their own fans. Hamlet find themselves out of the bottom four only on goal difference, and have been in rather indifferent form, giving their supporters about as much certainty as those folks building HS2. They did get back to winning ways on Saturday as they knocked Cheshunt out of the FA Trophy.

Finally, down at the sunny seaside, Whitehawk welcome Haringey Borough. The Hawks could hit the top four with victory, and they haven't lost a league match since the opening day- although the entire month of September saw them only play two. Borough find themselves at the bottom of the table and without a league win, and hoping that they will finally be able to transfer their form in knock out competitions to their league programme. If they can stop conceding late goals they will surely soon begin to climb the table.
