Selley in at the Tanners- and he soon has company

Ian Selley takes over at Leatherhead- and brings Sonny Wheeler and Niran Butler with him

On May 16th (we were on holiday and are catching up with news from the last two weeks) Leatherhead announced that their replacement for Hayden Bird would be Ian Selley, who moves to Fetcham Grove after taking Westfield to the Play Offs.

Ian took over at Woking Park in February 2023, his second South Central position after he steered Chertsey Town to the 21-22 South Central Play Off Final- indeed we're still not quite sure how they lost it! In between the two posts he spent a rather short time at Hartley Wintney.

Prior to his time with Chertsey, he was a UEFA Cup Winners Cup winner with Arsenal, and went on to coach with the club. He also lifted the FA Cup- he was an unused substitute as Arsenal defeated Sheffield Wednesday in a 1993 Final Replay; and the League Cup, similarly occupying the bench the same season against the same opponents.

He later played for Southend United, Fulham, Wimbledon and Woking, amongst others, and managed Sandhurst Town.

Ian immediately boosted his new squad by heading back to his former side and bringing in two Westfield favourites. First in was goalkeeper Sonny Wheeler, who had a magnificent 23-24, keeping fifteen clean sheets and playing a massive part in getting his side to the Play Offs. Sonny joined the club permanently in June last year and ended up making fifty two appearances last season, following forty the previous season- when he was on loan from Bracknell Town.

He signed for Bracknell Town in the summer of 2019, moving to Larges Lane from Wealdstone whilst training full time with Reading. He had already spent time with AFC Bournemouth and Watford, and had previously turned out for Binfield, prior to the Moles joining our ranks.

He has also played for Blackwell Heath and Sandhurst Town.

The next new arrival was Niran Butler, who only moved to Woking Park in February. Defender Niran headed to Westfield from Pitching In Isthmian Premier side Kingstonian.

Niran came through the youth setup at Barnet, and first came to our attention in the summer of 2019 when he signed for Staines Town, where he made fifteen appearances. He moved on to play for Maldon and Tiptree in summer of 2020, and made fourteen appearances as a Jammer before the second campaign in a row came to a premature end.

He made ten appearances for Sutton Common Rovers during 21-22, and then signed for Westfield for the first time, where he made thirty four appearances during the 22-23 season. He followed former Field boss Simon Lane to Kingstonian last summer, and turned out twenty six times for the K's, scoring three goals.
