Swans hit Merstham for six- but Stoke keep pace

By Ian Townsend

Our top two remain separated only by goal difference, Chertsey go fifth- and Tooting have relegation confirmed

Walton and Hersham took their unbeaten run to seventeen matches by hammering the side who were both first and seventeenth in that run, Merstham. The last time the two sides met, on January 2nd, the match saw six goals- three each. Yesterday saw six more, but on this occasion they all went to the Swans- and super striker Eddie Simon got the first five to take his total to FORTY TWO for the season. Twenty one of those, rather incredibly, have arrived in his last nine matches, and this was his sixth hat trick of the campaign. Harry Mills also scored for the Swans, in the very last minute- a result which send the Moatsiders back into the bottom two, their goal difference in tatters, albeit only two points from safety with two matches to go.

The Swans are ahead of Basingstoke Town only on goal difference, after Stoke won two-nil at Thatcham Town. Bradley Wilson got them both, one in each half- the second from the spot. Basingstoke travel to Guernsey on Sunday before hosting South Park, whilst the Swans welcome Southall on Saturday before travelling to Thatcham on the last day of the campaign.

Chertsey Town are up to fifth after a two-nil win over former manager Ian Selley and his Westfield side. Trevan Robinson gave the Curfews an early lead, but victory was only confirmed right at the end when Troy Walters added the second. The Curfews are two points ahead of sixth place Hanworth Villa, however the Villains have two games in hand. Binfield are a point further back, as are Leatherhead, who saw their march towards the play off places slowed down by the resilience of Sutton Common Rovers. The Tanners went ahead on twenty seven minutes, Daniel Hector opening the scoring, only for Max Oldham to level less than ten minutes later. That was that, Rovers ending the holiday weekend one point from safety, although fifth bottom side Ashford Town have played two games fewer.

South Park probably saw their play off dreams end as Guernsey guaranteed their own safety at Whitehall Lane. The Green Lions were quickly two goals ahead, Sam Murray and Ross Allen the scorers, but Finlay Johnson got one back four minutes before the break and right at the end Ryan Healy earned the hosts a point. The result leaves the Sparks four points away from fifth place with two matches remaining.

Bedfont Sports gave themselves a lifeline with a narrow win over Uxbridge. Ryan Case gave them the lead on thirteen minutes, and with eighteen minutes left Sam Evans made it two- although the visitors then made a match of it as Alex Witham got one back. Sports are eighteenth, two points from safety with two matches remaining.

Finally, Tooting & Mitcham United lost their grip on the Isthmian League place they’d held since 1956. The Terrors welcomed Chipstead, and went ahead on nineteen minutes through Anuar Ceesay, but within six minutes Bradley Wilson had levelled from the spot and that, sadly for the hosts, was that. Ollie Hamstead was dismissed after the break, but the Terrors couldn’t take advantage and their relegation was confirmed.
