Swifts deliver defeat to the Yellows

AFC Sudbury’s unbeaten run ends as Heybridge Swifts climb into the top five

Two of our top performing sides met in Pitching In Isthmian North last night, and they duly delivered a five goal thriller- and the end of our only unbeaten record.

Hosts Heybridge Swifts have the enticing prospect of a home FA Trophy tie against Hereford on Saturday, but were they distracted? Not for a moment! The Scraley Road side had a perfect home record as our unbeaten leaders AFC Sudbury came to call, and they weren’t prepared to relinquish that without a fight. It took only three minutes for the hosts to go ahead, Kieran Jones assisted by Ross Wall- and they made it two midway through the half, Sam Carter hitting the top corner from the edge of the box.

Half time woke up the Yellows, and in Nnamdi Nwachuku they had the League’s best performing striker. It took him only one minute of the second half to head home his twenty fourth goal of the season and give his side renewed hope, but on fifty seven minutes that hope was dashed somewhat, as Daren Phillips headed home a corner. Nwachuku then headed home a corner of his own, and the Yellows had twenty two minutes left to level.

Try as they might, the equaliser didn’t come, and it was the Swifts faithful who were left to celebrate long into the night- and prepare for the visit of the Bulls on Saturday. One stat to leave you with, however- Nwachuku has now scored in his last ten matches.

Sudbury are a point clear at the top, whilst Swifts go fifth.
